DESCRIPTION

Westerly 33  -  1980  -  £26,750

A strongly built and easily handled centre cockpit ketch; this one with lots of good work done to her rig, underwater sections and engine. Recently 'Osmosis treated' professionally and finished with Coppercoat (2017). Notably, this particular Westerly 33 has been modified, with a second heads compartment (accessible from the aft cabin) and the galley extended with additional working surface provided between cooker and the starboard settee berth. The linings have been replaced at some point (albeit some time ago) and much of the upholstery replaced.

The Mercedes OM636 is the original engine, but was removed from the vessel in 2006 for inspection and major overhaul and in spring 2018 has been the subject of a compression test and professional top-end overhaul.

Declared by the original lines designer as his particular favourite of all the Westerlies drawn by the Laurent Giles Partnership, the 'long' and elegant hull was also used for the aft-cockpit Discus that is renown for its epic, arctic explorations and capabilities. As a former Westerly employee this is the pick of the bunch from my point of view too!

Sails &Amp; Spars

  • Ketch rigged on the original Proctor spars.
  • Rotostay headsail furling system to forestay, slab reefing main boom and mainsail.
  • The standing rigging was dates from 2001, when 'over-spec'd' rigging and turnbuckles were specified and fitted.
  • The main and mizzen halyards date from 2006, otherwise the rest of the running is of indeterminate age.
  • Mast-climbing steps are fitted to aid inspection and maintenance.
  • 2 sets of sails included, but only the largest roller-reefing genoa has been noted as being from 2001.
  • The cruising chute supplements a 'variety' of headsails.

Mechanical And Electrical Systems

A Mercedes OM636, 4 cylinder diesel that is rated at 42hp is the original, but has been removed from the vessel or thoroughly overhauled on at least two occasions in its life, with a professional top-end overhaul and new exhaust elbow fitted in 2017 and a compression pressure test and injectors serviced in April 2018.

Four deep-cycle 'leisure' batteries are fitted, the majority of which date from 2014.

Charging is by either an engine-driven 50 Amp alternator and/or a wind generator; both  controlled and monitored by an Adverc Battery management system.
A 220-240V AC system is fitted for when shore support is available.
Tankage:

  • Fuel:              225 litre (approx. 50 Imp.gallons) in a stainless steel tank.
  • Fresh Water: 300 litres in stainless steel tank, plus 40 litres in hot water tank.
  • Black water holding tank:  61 litres.

Accommodation:

Seven berths in three cabins finished in sapele faced ply with the head-linings replaced at some point in time and the forward and aft cabins' upholstery replaced.

Forward Cabin:  Conventional, but very spacious 'V' berths with in-filling conversion cushion. Opening port lights to coach roof sides and acryl;ic hatch over. LED lighting units replace the original 'Westerly' filament-fitted lamps.
Saloon:  Here, the original velour cushion covers have been retained. The settee berth to port side can be converted to a generous double without recourse to removing or using the double-leafed table and a single settee berth is fitted to starboard. Both berths are provided with wooden lee boards for use at sea. In this particular W33, the starboard berth has effectively been moved forward in the boat, with a trtter box provision through the main bulkhead to be able to accommodate a non-standard, additional work surface at the galley. As with all the W33's and Discus boats, the table is genuinely able to accommodate 6 diners!

Galley:  'Norfen's galley has been modified with a large stainless steel sink fitted in a supplementary peninsular ahead of the cooker's aperture, leaving the original location for the sink (beneath the overhang of the cockpit's port-side seating) as a clear working surface. Hot and cold pressurised water is supplied via mixer tap and a 'Nature Pure' in-line filter is fitted in the freshwater supply. A Neptune 2500 cooker by Plastimo with grill and oven was fitted in 2007. The original top-opening cool locker has been fitted with Frigoboat refrigeration unit.

Forward heads: Jabsco electric-flushing toilet plumbed to a black water holding tank. Stainless steel handwash basin, with shower head faucet.

Aft cabin: This cabin is accessed from the cockpit, behind the steering wheel  and notably was modified to provide access to an 'en-suite' heads that is located in the aft area of the cockpit's port locker. The original twin single berths remain and an access doorway was cut through the bulkhead between this cabin and the locker. A Jabsco toilet with a surrounding holding cassette tank is fitted. A small hand basin is fitted, but the water supply to this basin is currently unconnected.

History &Amp; Construction

A spacious centre cockpit ketch constructed by Westerly Yachts Ltd in 1980. 'Norfen' has been owned by experienced, capable owners - one of whom spec'd the boat for 'Skippered charter' in the Mediterranean by - amongst other things - converting relatively dead space in the port cockpit locker to provide an en-suite heads compartment for the aft cabin.
Upon purchase (in 2006) by the current vendor the keel was removed and the keel's  supporting structure was professionally replaced under surveyor's supervision. The opportunity was taken to have the engine removed and bench overhauled at that same time. Bills paid at this time were in the order of £18,000.
From approximately three years ago the vessel has been in a new shared ownership, from which point further significant maintenance was undertaken, the underwater surfaces being stripped, dried and and epoxy coated professionally and finished with Coppercoat and the engine having new mounts and a top-end overhaul carried out.

Full ownership history from new on this vessel is available. Now, regrettably due to the ownership partnership having to be dissolved and the majority partner's age and health related matters the decision has been made to sell 'Norfen', but she is very much in-commission and must be the foremost Westerly 33 to view.
Note that this vessel is currently lying afloat, on a River Tamar swing mooring. Viewing arrangements shall include accessing the vessel by rigid dinghy tender.
