Key West Boats has its origins back in the 1980s when founder Hutch Holseberg decided to build a fishing boat the whole family could enjoy. That model was the 1700, launched in 1988, and it kickstarted a long legacy. Holseberg wanted to create a compact, trailerable multi-species saltwater fishing boat that offered excellent craftsmanship but without being prohibitively expensive. Fast forward to the present day and Key West Boats has maintained that ethos, building some of the best quality, best value fishing boats in the industry. With bay boats, offshore fishing boats, tournament-level boats, and center consoles amongst its line-up it’s one of the longest-standing and most respected brands in the US.
After its initial success the brand grew quickly and through the 90s added more and more models to its line-up. In 1994 it added the blue water 2000WA cuddy cabin to great acclaim and this was the start of Key West Boat’s move into the offshore saltwater market. The 210LS Oasis introduced the idea of a multi-purpose fishing, watersports, and family cruiser to the brand. With the addition of bay boats, family sports boats, and offshore sportfishers, it offers an impressive line-up.
The brand prides itself on creating a boat in which to make memories with loved ones. It’s a goal that has resulted in huge attention to detail, not just in the huge range of fishing accessories, but in the comfort, styling, and finish too. These include clever use of space for seating, sun protection, ease of handling, and the chance to enjoy a wide range of activities.
Key West Boats has been in the business of making boats for six decades and has a large number of models in its current and past line-up. Looking at the present range, the Family Sportsman Series has seven models ranging in size from 18 feet to 29 feet, all designed for family comfort and serious fishing. Each one of these center console models has different attributes including hard T-Tops, single or twin engines, an emphasis on comfortable seating (in both the bow seating area and rear bench), and of course an impressive range of fishing accessories such as rod racks, trolling rod holders, and live wells. Two of the brand’s best-selling models to this day are the 219FS and the 239FS, which launched in 2013 and are well-represented on the used market.
The four models in the Bay Reef Series include the 188BR, the 210BR, the 230BR, and the 250BR. Designed to tackle the changing conditions of inshore or near-shore fishing grounds, they are center consoles that are well-geared for fishing, whether that’s recreational fishing or tournament-level. Features include a bow fishing deck, macerated fish box, huge livewells, and under-gunnel rod storage capable of holding 9’ plus fly rods.
The compact and trailerable Center Console Series includes the 1720CC and the 244CC. The 1720CC was first launched in 1992 and remains one of the most versatile small fishing boats on the market. It was this model that really helped put Key West Boats on the map and remains popular to this day.
The brand’s two saltwater-friendly Dual Console Series models include the 203DFS and the 239DFS and offer a multi-functional family runabout boat. Watersports, fishing, and cruising in comfort are all possible thanks to the well-thought-out range of seating and features. There’s a swim ladder, wraparound windshield, bow seating, and fishing gear. In the words of Key West Boats it created a range with the “low maintenance of a self-bailing, fiberglass-lined cockpit with the comfort of a typical bowrider sport boat”.
With a long history of boat-making and a large current line-up, there are many Key West Boats models you can choose. Some of its most popular through the years have been the 1720 Center Console, first launched in 1992, as well as the 219FS and the 239FS, which are part of the long-standing Family Sportsman Series.
