Hallberg-Rassy is a Swedish brand of bluewater cruising yachts that has been building well-found sailboat models since 1943. Today the brand has built nearly 10,000 yachts and exports them around the world. Search for new and used Hallberg-Rassy Yachts for sale in your region and refine by price, model, size or age.
The name Hallberg-Rassy is renowned among keen sailors for its capable bluewater cruising yachts. The longstanding Swedish brand, whose yachts range from 34 to 69 feet in length, has a unique history that began in 1943 when Harry Hallberg began building wooden yachts on the island of Orust in Sweden.
In 1963 Hallberg became one of the pioneers in the serial production of sailboats using GRP, and he was the first to build GRP hulls with wooden superstructures in a series. It was also during this time that a man named Christoph Rassy, a German who came to Sweden with the sole intention of building boats, entered the picture. He bought Hallberg’s now too-small yard in Kungsviken when the business moved to nearby Ellös, and for the following decade the two became competitors.
Rassy’s first boats were built in mahogany and the design was pioneering in that it offered a bluewater cruising yacht with a strong engine and center cockpit protected by a windshield. This unique combination is one still used in Hallberg-Rassy’s designs to this day.
In 1972, Hallberg retired, and Rassy bought his yard in Ellös, naming his new company Hallberg-Rassy despite the two men never working together. Throughout the following decades many iconic sailboats emerged from the Hallberg-Rassy yard, drawing from the huge success of the Hallberg name internationally and combining it with daring innovation from the Rassy side.
The result included models such as Monsun 31, the first to be built from the merged brand, which sold over 900 yachts in 10 years. The 1970s also saw the Hallberg-Rassy 41, the first model with a walk-through to the aft cabin, again to great acclaim.
The brand has had many notable developments over the decades, including cooperation with Argentine superyacht designer Germán Frers, which began in 1988. He has since designed some 25 models for Hallberg-Rassy, accounting for over one third of the almost 10,000 boats built by the brand since its founding. Other company developments include launching what is now Scandinavia’s largest sailboat show, Open Yard, as well as a separate company selling spares and accessories. The king and queen of Sweden have even visited the Hallberg-Rassy yard, a testament to the standing of the brand.
In recent times the brand has designed some of its largest ever models, and has won many awards for its efforts. Winners of prestigious international awards include the Hallberg-Rassy 40, which launched in 2002; the Hallberg-Rassy 64, which launched in 2011; the Hallberg-Rassy 44, which launched in 2017; the Hallberg-Rassy 50, which launched in 2022; and the Hallberg-Rassy 400, which came out in 2023.
It comes as no surprise that Hallberg-Rassy has built many models in its long life, and these are well-represented globally on the used market. Today’s lineup consists of eight models that combine the innovations and successes of their predecessors.
The smallest in the lineup is the Hallberg-Rassy 340, designed by Frers. It features twin wheels, a contemporary design, impressive seaworthiness, a spacious deck layout, and a modern sail plan. The new Hallberg-Rassy 370 is a combination of the classic features and contemporary styling the brand is known for, as well as a large aft cockpit with twin steering wheels and twin rudders that provide safety and control.
Models such as the Hallberg-Rassy 400 and Hallberg-Rassy 40C feature an easy-to-handle rig, the choice of one or two aft cabins, spacious saloons and galleys, and a choice of oak interiors.
The Hallberg-Rassy 44 features an integral bowsprit, twin rudders, large cockpit, fold-out swim platform, a modern sail plan, and up to three cabins, while the Hallberg-Rassy 50 takes all these features further with yet more stowage, receiving the title of European Yacht of the Year 2022.
The Hallberg-Rassy 57 offers yet more when it comes to living space, stowage, performance, and handling, a clear, spacious, and safe deck, a walk-in engine room, push-button sailing controls, and an impressively large interior designed for longterm onboard living.
The largest model in the current lineup is the Hallberg-Rassy 69, the company’s flagship. This elegant model honors both contemporary styling and classic décor, has a center cockpit that is available with either a soft or hard top, and a light-filled and spacious one-level interior (including a crew cabin).
