Wooden Ships Comments on this Manx Nobby gaff cutter Currently lying in Southampton, she is believed to be a Manx Nobby and probably built as an engineless working boat before the Great War to judge from the construction. The original history of this vessel seems to be lost in the mists of time but she was almost certainly built as an engineless working boat. The original history of this vessel seems to be lost in the mists of time but she was almost certainly built as an engineless working boat. The last Nobby was launched in 1917. She had a major rebuild between 1978 – 1985 and appears to be in very good, clean condition and ready for sea. She is a big, spacious boat for her dimensions with lots of character, no racer but a very comfortable sea boat. She has a long keel, almost straight stem and fascinating pointed stern with a steeply raked stern post typical of the Nobbys. Ample freeboard, good deck space. Rudder on the stern post with long tiller. Construction Planked in Pitch Pine fastened to heavy sawn oak frames with galvanised dumps. No external ballast keel. All internal ballast of iron and lead stowed in cradles Heavy grown oak floors across the centreline. Straight laid pine deck over sawn oak deck beams on a heavy beam shelf. Deck re-caulked and payed in 2017. Hardwood painted coverboards with a 4" toe rail all round. Low coachroof with mahogany coamings and bronze portholes. Painted plywood coachroof deck. Deep and spacious cockpit with good locker space. Cockpit drains into a sump tank which is pumped overboard.   Rig Gaff cutter rig on a solid keel stepped pole mast. Solid wooden boom with slab reefing, gaff and bowsprit. Galvanised wire standing rigging to external chain plates, rigging all new in 2004. Mainsail, staysail and 2 jibs from 2004.   Machinery Volvo Penta 29hp 3cyl diesel installed new in 1984. Single lever controls to PRM gearbox. 3 blade fixed bronze propeller offset to starboard. 28 gallons of diesel in 2 mild steel tanks. 32 gallons of fresh water in 2 stainless steel tanks 3 x 12 volt batteries for engine and domestic systems. Professionally installed shore power system   Accommodation 5 berths in total including V-berths in the fore cabin, 2 saloon settee berths and a quarter berth. Steps down over the engine box into the main saloon with galley to port and large chart desk facing outboard to starboard. Quarter berth to starboard aft of the chart desk. Galley has a 2 burner gas stove with oven and grill, single stainless sink and adequate work top space. Saloon with good standing headroom and a centreline dropleaf table. Masses of storage behind the settee backs and cupboards above. Cast iron solid fuel stove forward to port. Passageway to starboard going forward with the heads compartment to starboard. Blakes sea toilet with hand basin draining into the toilet bowl. Large storage locker opposite to port.
