For well over 50 years, Ranger Boats has been one of the biggest names in fishing boats, and later in pontoon boats. Throughout the decades it has stayed at the forefront of innovation and design, with many patented or industry-first developments under their belt that paved the way for industry standards.
Ranger Boats today builds a huge variety of small- to mid-sized fishing boats, including bass (the founders Forrest and Nina Wood are credited with creating the first modern bass boat), multi-species, bay, fish ‘n’ play, saltwater, waterfowl utility, and pontoon boats spanning many ranges and models. Its boats are renowned for their ruggedness, practicality, performance, and safety.
When it comes to patents and innovative developments, Ranger has a long list including possibly its most renowned, the aerated livewell. Now seen widely across the fishing boat sector, the aerated livewell was revolutionary as it allowed anglers to keep fish alive during a tournament and then release them at the end of the day.
Ownership of Ranger Boats has passed hands several times throughout its history, and since 2014 has been owned by parent company Bass Pro Group LLC, which it bought from Platinum Equity. Other top brands under this parent company include Triton, Tracker, Mako, Regency, Tahoe, and Ascend.
To summarize the current line-up of Ranger Boats is no easy task, as it currently has 54 models across 17 different ranges. Broadly speaking, however, the brand’s models can be divided into fiberglass, aluminum, saltwater, and pontoon models, showcasing the broad styles and functions of its fishing craft.
When Ranger Boats first started building fishing boats, it focused on bass boats followed by vessels suited to catching walleye, salmon, and musky. It was the Ranger Fisherman series that launched it into the limelight of serious big-water anglers and was later accompanied by models suited to saltwater flats and bays. In the years since, the company has expanded its line-up significantly, and there are today many excellent examples to be found on the used market that offer good value for money.
Back to the current line-up of Ranger Boats and there is a huge choice. In the fiberglass range, we find the Fisherman and Angler series, with deep-V hulls, rugged strength, huge deck spaces, and side consoles. The Angler models offer a more family-friendly cross-over with more luxuries.
There’s also a large line-up of revolutionary bass boats, with the Z Comanche series and Z 500 series, offering a range of high-performance, super-fast, and innovative bass boats for every level. The Alpha and RT series are the brand’s aluminum bass boat offerings, bringing the same level of performance to this sector.
Continuing with the aluminum boats are the VX and VS series’ deep-V hull boats, as well as the tough RB Series inshore models. The Bay Series, which includes the 2360, 2510, 2600, and 2660 models, takes things up a notch both in size and capability, offering plenty of muscle for catching mahi or tarpon.
Since 2016, Ranger has added pontoon boats to its extensive list, and the Reata Pontoon remains popular on the used market. Today it has 10 models of pontoon, with different ranges focusing on fishing, cruising, cross-over fish-and-cruise, as well as a luxury model. They offer the same fishability and toughness that Ranger is known for in a more family-friendly lake boat style.
Choosing the best Ranger Boat model ultimately comes down to what you want to do in the boat. With one of the biggest line-ups of models in the industry, the company caters to almost all anglers. The Fisherman Series has been one of the brand’s best-selling ranges for decades, as is their Comanche and Reata Pontoon boat.
Ranger Boats is considered one of the best fishing boat brands in the industry thanks to the sturdiness and capability of its boats. It designs all its models with pure angling at heart, whether it’s saltwater, bay, bass, multi-species, or pontoon fishing. Equipped with the latest in fishing equipment, there is a model for every type of angler, from weekend enthusiasts to families to tournament-level professionals.
