History

This vessel was originally intended as a boat to carry cargo. The saloon was designed as the hold with living accommodation aft. However, this plan changed rapidly after launch, and she was fitted out as a private yacht before leaving South Africa for South America. The family spent many years cruising and living aboard between Brazil and New York, with significant time in the Caribbean, where she proved to be a very comfortable and safe family cruising yacht. The current owners purchased her while in the Caribbean and used her as a cruising home in the tropics before sailing back to the UK in 2012.

Specifications

  • Displacement: 17 tons
  • Sail Area: 2210 sqft
Construction

The entire hull was shot blasted when new and painted with International epoxy paint, preserving it extremely well. The topsides were repainted in black Jotun in 2014, and the decks were repainted with Epifanes in 2011.

Hull: Built in South Africa in 1997 to Norske Veritas standard from 5mm welded steel plate. Angle bar frames at approximately 100cm centres with 40x40x6mm angle longitudinal stringers. The keel is of 8mm plate with a 12mm bottom plate. The hull is insulated to the waterline with 2″ polystyrene foam.

Decks and Cockpit

Decks are of 4mm welded steel plate with a 12″ mahogany bulwark all around, held with steel stanchions welded to the deck. A varnished Iroko capping rail is mounted on the bulwark. The self-draining cockpit is made of 3mm steel plate with scrubbed teak sole and seat gratings.

Superstructure

The dog house is made of 4mm steel plate with fixed glass windows. It features a steeply cambered roof of 1/2″ T&G mahogany planking overlaid with 12mm marine plywood and sheathed. A sliding hatch on the centerline with double teak companionway doors provides access to the cabin, with a spray hood to prevent water ingress.

Rigging

The vessel features a gaff ketch rig on hollow steel tube keel stepped masts. Varnished wooden booms, gaffs, bowsprit, and topmast. The bowsprit and wooden spreaders were replaced in 2014. The standing rigging is galvanized with rigging screws to chain plates welded into the deck.

All sails were made by North Sails of Cape Town in 1998:

  • Mainsail: Duradon
  • Mizzen: Duradon
  • Staysail: Duradon
  • Jib: Duradon

  • Additional Tank: 120 gallons not yet commissioned
  • Fresh Water Capacity: 200 gallons in 3 separate tanks
