DESCRIPTION

Christobel II - an Andrews day launch

The Andrews day launch is a nineteen fifties post WWII launch which one can imagine grew out of the popular 25 foot slipper launch design to provide something with more space for a family, room for a loo and small galley as well as a day cabin which can also be used for overnighting. Most of the original boats built in the fifties are still in use today. Many have been rebuilt over the decades by a variety of skilled boatbuilders. Christobel II is no exception to the rule. She was acquired by her enthusiastic classic boat owners (this being their third classic boat in a long history of ownership) who have enjoyed several years of extended cruising on board. They are active members of the Thames Vintage Boat Club and as such have participated in the Traditional Boat Festival during their ownership. The history below comes from the retired journalist's keyboard.....

Cristobel II was built c1952 by Andrews Boatyard at Bourne End for a whisky distillery owner who named her ‘Highland Mist’ after his company.

She was later owned by a Mr Chester of Windsor who named her SHARDELOE. After the death of his wife the boat was little used and placed for sale at Romney Lock Boathouse two years. later   In the autumn of 1979 she was purchased by Stephen Cox who put her into the Phillips Henley auction of 1987 because of anticipated hull repairs. She was bought by The London Brick Company and sent to Peter Freebody at Hurley for restoration. SHARDELOE was mentioned in the restorations featured on the Freebody website

She was sold to Martin Stone in 1991 who renamed her CRISTOBEL II and registered her with the Thames Vintage Boat Club as TVIN 73. She was originally fitted with a Morris Vedette petrol engine which was not very conveniently situated to the rear of the forward cockpit. Although this allowed space for two Lloyd Loom chairs, it complicated the detachable folding door arrangements to the saloon to allow for the engine casing.  At some point the engine was moved forward and provided with hydraulic transmission.  She was fitted with a Ford Watermota SeaTiger engine with electronic ignition and hydraulic gearbox and this reliable engine and gearbox are still in situ today.

The iconic Andrews Day Launch, despite its name, was designed to be a practical weekender. By adding a centre board between the two bench seats in the cabin a double berth can be created.   A wash basin and chemical lavatory are provided.  This original arrangement was reinstated for the current owners who did a great deal of work at the Henwood and Dean boatyard in Hambleden. Invoices for all the maintenance carried out in their ownership area available for a new owner.

The current owners/vendors have got into vintage boating thanks to Christobel II, becoming active members of the Thames Vintage Boat Club. Their delight has been such that they are now buying a Dunkirk Little Ship to give them space for cross channel boating. In recent months however they have continued to upgrade Christobel II with smart striped fabrics on the interior. She will be at the Traditional Boat Festival in mid July.

Viewing will be close to our Henley office afloat by arrangement.
