If you follow major World Regattas, you will recognize the "Horacio Carabelli" name and their nautical tradition.
Bio: Born in Montevideo, with a Brazilian passport, Horacio is a mechanical engineer and naval architect. He has been involved in international sailing from Dinghies, Olympic Classes and Offshore yachts. From 2004 until 2012 he participated in three Volvo Ocean Race, and he won as part of the sailing crew of Ericsson 4 (2008/2009). He has also participated in four America’s Cup as design team manager. A second time with Pirelli and Prada sponsored Luna Rossa.
Horacio Carabelli Senior is the Master Sailboat Builder from southern Brazil who designed and built HORIZONTE. This beautiful schooner has a story to tell about a 5-Year circumnavigation-and-a-half under the keel. Departing the factory in Florianópolis, Brazil, she made her way to Florida eventually, by coming north to the Panama Canal, and westward around the World. That was almost 20 years ago, and she's been north and south along this hemisphere many times.
HORIZON is an 86-foot (including 17ft bowsprit) schooner style motorsailer, i.e. two masts with the mizzen mast taller than the main mast.
She boasts 6 cabins, of which two are ensuite, a dining room, a living room, galley, walk-in engine room, and a pilothouse.
Back then she was equipped with the latest navigation technology, among which a 36 nm radar, Weather Fax, Satellite Phone, and Ham Radio.
Now she is refitted with NEW B&G Zeus electronics!
She has a 110-volt electrical circuit powered by an in-line generator off the main engine shaft, providing power to all the comforts of a home.
The initial goal of the trip was to circumnavigate the world with pleasure and comfort. Twenty years ago, before it became trendy to post everything on Facebook and YouTube, the owners felt it was unfair to keep their adventure to themselves, and started a dissemination project through lectures and seminars in schools. They also shared through various media such as movies, photos, CD-ROM, photo exhibits, and mainly the internet.
They produced a monthly newsletter describing their adventures, cultural aspects, and historical and interesting facts found in their expeditions whether while sailing or traveling through the interior of the places they visited.
They documented facts, history, places, cultures, curiosities, ecology, politics, and social problems among other things.
The "Horizonte Project" officially began in Punta del Leste, Uruguay because the idea was to travel along the entire coast of Brazil, including the mouth of some rivers such as the "Rio São Francisco" and the Amazon River. From Brazil they headed straight to Trinidad & Tobago, the Venezuelan ABC (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao), Jamaica, USA, Bahamas, Dominican Republic, the West Indies islands between Dominican Republic and Trinidad & Tobago, Trinidad again, Los Roques, crossed the Panama Canal, Galapagos, Tuamotus Islands, Society Islands, French Polynesia, Niue, Palmerston, Tonga including the Vava'u Archipelago, New Zealand for hurricane season, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, Maldives, Chagos, Seychelles, Comoros, Madagascar, Mozambique, South Africa, Namibia, and Brazil.
This beautiful vessel has been meticulously maintained by the same owners for almost 30 years!
The masts are a one-piece single tree trunk and beautifully carved at the saloon level.
Always Professionally Captained and Complete Ship's Log dating back almost 30 years!
