When Kevin Costner sailed through the fantasy movie Waterworld, he did so on a custom-built Lagoon trimaran boat. OK, so the design may have been a far cry from Lagoon’s trademark classic boat elegance, but the core elements were there: reliability, space and plenty of innovation.
Established in 1984 Lagoon boat first roared to success with its iconic and record-beating racing multihulls. At the time Lagoon was an extension of JTA (Jeanneau Technologies Avancées), and it was during these early years that the very first generation of leisure and off-shore cruising catamarans was born. The Lagoon 55, 47, 57 and 67 all owe their origins to the late eighties and early nineties, and they set an impressive precedent for what was to come.
In 1996 the Beneteau Group acquired Jeanneau shipyards and handed development of the Lagoon brand to Construction Navale Bordeaux. It was to be a turning point for the much-loved multihulls, which are sought-after for their incredible safety record, their spacious interiors and their speed. Architects Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) took the design helm, putting their skills and achievements on racing multihulls into crafting world-class leisure catamarans.
Between 1997 and 2003 Lagoon established itself on the global catamaran scene, skyrocketing themselves into the top of the leaderboard. They launched an entire catalogue of boats; the 380, 410, 440, 470, 500 and 570, each exemplifying the standards that Lagoon were fast becoming renowned for. Ranging from 11 to 17 metres in length, these were catamarans that were changing the way we looked at leisure sailing. Indeed, the 410 was truly innovative, with her vertical glazing which set a global precedent, while the positioning of the 380’s engines in the aft compartment created silent cabins and easier maneuvering.
What Lagoon had created was seafaring travel and comfort combined, and the yachts were more spacious than ever before through clever design of the available space that a multihull provides. At the dawn of the new millennium the very first Lagoon motor catamaran emerged; the 13 metre Lagoon Power 43. It smashed records in its wake, with 113 yachts produced. Indeed, all of these earlier sail and motor models are classic Lagoon, highly sought-after to this day. They set the foundation for Lagoon’s principles on which all future yachts would be based; maximum protection from the sun, maximum use of space and more comfort. Even the vertical cabin windows, designed to allow more light in, have become a trademark feature.
In the years that followed Lagoon’s forward-thinking and innovation sped faster than a cruising multihull in a strong breeze. In 2004, the Lagoon 440 Boat became the first ever catamaran under 45 feet to feature a gull wing shape nacelle. The fact that 423 yachts were produced is the testament to the market’s appreciation.
The 440 was followed in 2006 by the Lagoon 420 hybrid boat. It was the very first cruising catamaran in the world to be equipped with hybrid diesel/electric engines. The lagoon has long been an advocate for renewable energy and solar panels are a feature on many of their models. Likewise, all furniture panels on current models are made from reconstituted wood following an eco-responsible policy.
This decade has seen yet more major developments for Lagoon. The launch of the luxurious and fast 19 metre 620 in 2009 was a turning point in their production of larger yachts, and the model is still in production. Just five years later the magnificent 19.5 metre 630M turned heads when she sailed into the market. To prove the seaworthiness and safety of this elegant and ample-spaced motor yacht Lagoon had her sail the Atlantic on her very first voyage.
It was also during this time that Lagoon joined forces with one of the greats in naval architecture, Nauta Design, bringing a new infusion of creativity into their interiors. The Lagoon 450 boat was their first project together and a roaring success. Today Lagoon’s interiors are simple, beautiful, functional and classic, promising the utmost in comfort.
One of Lagoon’s best-loved models is the Lagoon 15.85 metre 52 boat, which was launched in 2012 and is still in production to this day, available as both a flybridge and sport top. The positioning of the rigging mast further aft was a major evolution in design, along with the modified methods of navigation and a self-tacking foresail. It can be configured with three, four, or five cabins, and marked a new era of cruising catamaran,
The current line-up is an impressive one. Elevated helm models such as the 380, 40, 42, 450 SporTop and 52 SporTop range from 11.55 metres to 15.85 metres. The range of full flybridge models includes the 450F, 50, 52F, 560 S2, 620 and the stunning flagship Seventy 7. This was a first for Lagoon in the over 24 metre category and is accompanied by the Seventy 8 motor yacht.
