The Best Mediterranean Superyacht Itineraries: Part 1

Whether it’s getting-off-the-beaten path and discovering isolated beaches and remote coves, being in the thick of the nightlife action and bustling social scenes, or venturing to far-off lands in search of weird and wonderful wildlife, when it comes to choosing a superyacht itinerary the choices are alluring and plentiful.

Brokers and captains are extremely experienced in putting superyacht charter itineraries together, and understand that there is no one-size-fits-all. An itinerary needs to be tailor-made to suit the guests on board and their unique interests. While your yachting adventure can be customized to your own tastes, with this series we take a look at some of the best superyacht itineraries in the world which will get your heart beating and your wanderlust flowing. We begin in the Mediterranean, where Italy’s Amalfi Coast, Croatia’s Dalmatian islands, the Balearics and Turkey await.

Old Time Glamour on an Italy Superyacht Charter Itinerary

Cruise along the beautiful Amalfi Coast on a superyacht itinerary that harnesses the romance of the region and soaks up the centuries-old history that has attracted poets and artists through the ages. Beginning in Naples, whose ancient city streets are home to hundreds of churches as well as the Duomo di San Gennaro cathedral, you cruise out into the Gulf of Naples – keeping an eye out for dolphins and whales - towards the volcanic island of Ischia. Here, vineyards, castles and hot springs await as you soak up the beauty and tranquility.

Once truly relaxed by the thermal waters of Ischia it’s on to the breathtaking beauty of Capri, where cobbled streets and bougainvillea-clad buildings hide delightfully quaint local restaurants whose scents entice you in. From there it’s on to the glamour-soaked Positano, whose pastel-coloured houses tumble down the cliffs to meet the shimmering blue sea. A jumble of designer boutiques, artists’ galleries and world class restaurants are nestled in the lanes creating an evening of romance and elegance.

Arriving in Amalfi by superyacht is awe-inspiring, its dramatic cliffs plummeting down to meet the Mediterranean Sea. History abounds here, from the Saint Andrew’s Cathedral to the medieval architecture with Moorish influence of the Museo Diocesano Amalfi, which tell the stories of its long past. When you’re cultured out, it’s time to spend a few days amid the natural beauty of the remote Aeolian Islands where adventure abounds. See the live volcano atop Stromboli and stand on its black sand beaches, stroll along tiny Panarea and its car-free lanes, or have a sulphuric mud bath on Vulcano island. Finish this classic Italy superyacht itinerary in glorious Sicily, where Mount Etna is the backdrop for excursions to ancient Taormina, bucolic villages and secluded coves.

Natural Beauty and Breathtaking Beaches on a Balearic Islands Superyacht Charter Itinerary

The Balearic Islands of Menorca, Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera are one of the Mediterranean’s best-loved cruising destinations, and it’s easy to see why. Your week-long itinerary begins in Palma, Mallorca’s enigmatic capital where chic marinas, luxury boutiques and world class restaurants are tucked into a maze of cobbled streets and overlooked by the gargantuan waterfront cathedral. A short cruise along the rocky coast brings you to the sweeping arc of golden sand and turquoise sea that is Es Trenc, where you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve arrived in the Caribbean.

Leaving Mallorca behind you cruise past Cabrera Island, a protected marine reserve famed for its namesake goats, as you head across to the pristine island of Formentera. A well-guarded local secret, Formentera’s crystal clear seas and powdery white sands are the perfect spot for watersports or sun-soaking before heading to the booming Ibiza Town. World famous DJs front the summer’s hottest clubs as you party the night away, followed by a calm morning of massage and breakfast as you make your way back to Mallorca and its dramatic Tramuntana Mountains.

Tucked in the mountains and engulfed by orange and lemon orchards, Soller and its bustling main square and ancient tram are as quaint as they come. Enjoy traditional pastries and the fresh mountain air before making your way down to the fishing village turned chic marina of Port Andratx on Mallorca’s southern coast to end a Balearics superyacht itinerary of natural beauty, ancient culture and world class entertainment.

A Taste of the Exotic on a Turkey Superyacht Charter Itinerary

Turkey is one of the rising stars of the superyacht world, and an itinerary cruising the Mediterranean coast will be filled with history, culture, sophistication and touch of the exotic. Start your superyacht charter in Bodrum, whose history dates back centuries. Soak up the views from the imposing, 600 year old Bodrum Castle or take a day trip to the ancient city of Halicarnassus before spending an evening sipping cocktails amid Bodrum’s swanky nightlife scene.

From there your itinerary takes you along the coast to the island of Sedir, often referred to as Cleopatra Island. Legend has it the sand, made by seashells only found in Egypt, was brought here especially for her, and you can sink your toes into the protected sand and swim in the clear seas as you anchor offshore. Continue your historical journey as you stop at the island of Knidos and take a tour of the ancient Greek city, before continuing on to small, pretty town of Datca. Anchoring offshore you get a true panorama of Datca surrounded by lush vegetation, but head ashore to discover its rich cultural heritage and modern Turkish lifestyle.

Your last stop before returning to Bodrum is the small town of Bozburun, where you will get a true glimpse into coastal Turkish life. Try the moreish thyme honey, buy natural sponges fished from the nearby waters, peruse the markets, walk the harbour promenade and enjoy a relaxed meal with sea views and home-cooked food. It is the perfect end to a Turkey superyacht itinerary of discovery, culture and history.

Island-Hopping on a Croatia Superyacht Charter Itinerary

Croatia’s star is most certainly rising in the superyacht world, and its more than 1,000 islands are the perfect cruising grounds. Set off on Croatia superyacht itinerary along the Dalmatian Coast, starting in the world famous city of Dubrovnik. The walled city is as picturesque as it is fascinating, the limestone streets packed with one historical relic after another. Begin your superyacht holiday with a trip up the hills on the cable cars for lunch with a panorama of your superyacht below.

From Dubrovnik it’s on to the stunning natural beauty of the island of Mljet, where beautiful lakes, a national park and 135 kilometres of coastline offer coves, bays and pebble beaches from which to swim or kayak. As the sun sets the aromas wafting from the local seafood restaurants will lure you ashore. Next on the itinerary is the tiny island of Vis, its natural beauty virtually untouched and its pebble beaches creating some of the clearest waters imaginable.

Hvar is one of the more well-known stops on this itinerary, its combination of rugged beauty and cosmopolitan flair the perfect recipe for superyacht charter guests. With a swanky marina leading to a cobbled square around which restaurants, bars and cafes serve cocktails well into the night, it is the nightlife capital of the region. Yet by day Hvar is a traditional as they come, with colourful markers, winding streets and ancient relics. For some much needed relaxation, the neighbouring island of Brac offers beautiful beaches fringed by pine forests and a stiff breeze perfect for water sports.

Your penultimate stop on this Dalmatian Coast superyacht charter is pretty town of Trogir, whose red-roofed buildings hide Venice-like canals and waterways as well as astounding Baroque architecture. Spend a day exploring the labyrinthine streets and soaking up the Croatian lifestyle before making your way to your final destination of Split. Croatia’s second largest city is home to some of the most impressive Roman remains in the world including the vast Diocletian’s Palace, and has a buzzing superyacht scene.
