An unusual slipper stern launch
Sun Penny is a special boat and one which I was involved with in my days with the Steam and Electric Launch Company. In total three of this design were built with the prototype being Back to the Future with a navy blue hull. All three are electrically powered as was the plan during the design process. Sun Penny was built for Stan and his wife Joy and was hence called Stans Joy ! Since 1998 she has been owned by the same couple who are trading up to a 26 ft Otter launch with a cabin, loo etc. However they have lavished plenty of love and varnish on this boat during their ownership as she has been overwintered ashore at Henwood and Dean with a fresh coat of varnish being applied to the decks on an annual basis. She has 16 new gel batteries in 2017 so should run for up to 20 hours at cruising speed on one charge. There is a folding canopy aft as well as a full length cover. Unusually this slipper seats 8 in comfort and complete stability. The forward seats are designed to flip backwards so that everyone can join in the conversation and eat around the folding table aft. The third boat was built as a superyacht tender for an oligarch in Turkey and is still afloat there and looking immaculate.
This is a true contemporary classic which will be thirty years old soon and looks as good as new. Her GRP low maintenance hull ensures lower maintenance costs than an historic slipper. Here at HSC we always offer the choice to any owner tempted by the Thames classic slipper launch.
