The first evolution of the design came from the pen of Herbert Reiach in 1919, naval architect and founding editor of Yachting Monthly. The first evolution of the design came from the pen of Herbert Reiach in 1919, naval architect and founding editor of Yachting Monthly. The brief was for a small dinghy that the ladies of the club could learn to sail in with ease, that was stable, spacious and easy to handle. In 1929 the design was adopted by the West Mersea Yacht Club as their new one-design dinghy class, with an increased sail area and fixed rudder. Later the design was named the Clipper Class and adopted by the West Cheshire Sailing Club, Royal Mersey Yacht Club and Liverpool University Sailing Club. This little dinghy was built by Anderson, Rigden and Perkins of Whitstable and has the later gunter rig with larger sail area. She was inspected by a shipwright recently and appears to be a basically sound and well presented clinker dinghy, complete with rig, oars, cover, trailer and outboard engine. Length 10’ Beam 4’6” Sail Area 80sqft Construction Clinker planked in mahogany all copper rivet fastened to steam bent oak timbers. Varnished mahogany transom. Varnished oak inwhales with grown oak quarter knees and breast hook. Varnished mahogany thwarts with oak knees. The original knees are grown, some have been replaced in 2 parts with sawn oak. Varnished mahogany slatted sole boards. Varnished mahogany centreboard box ith a painted steel centreplate, operated with a block and tackle. Varnished mahogany rudder with a fixed blade, hangs on a vertical bronze slide on the transom. Rig Gunter rig on a varnished wooden mast with varnished wooden boom and gunter yard. Cast bronze jaws on the yard. Mast is unstayed, supported by a stiff oak cross member at gunwhale level Red terylene sail in good condition Mainsail sheets to a galvanised horse across the transom.
