Wooden Ships Comments on this Sparkman and Stephens Finisterre Yawl Built in 1960 by the Wing on Shing Shipyard in Hong Kong to the Sparkman and Stephens Finisterre design. She was built for Group Captain Ingle of the Royal Cruising Club and was shipped straight back to England after her launch. She was built for Group Captain Ingle of the Royal Cruising Club and was shipped straight back to England after her launch. Built from well seasoned high quality teak, this is a hull that will last a lifetime. In 1981 she returned to the Royal Cruising Club and has been with the current owners ever since, wearing the Commodore’s broad pennant for a spell. She has been cruised by the family and by other friends around northern Europe and the north Atlantic between Iceland, Portugal and the Azores. She has also been cruised by many young people and, exceptionally, has won the RCC Cadet trophy five times. In recent years she has been based on the West coast of Scotland and is a well known boat on that coast and around the Shetlands. The Finisterre is a well known design, easy on the eye with good performance and comfortable at sea. The owners have often sailed her twohanded, the split rig making her an easily handled and manoeuvrable yacht in all conditions. This is a yacht that has been sailed many thousands of miles in the current ownership and has recently sailed south from Scotland. November 2020 survey available. Length on Deck 40' Length Overall 39'6" Length Waterline 27'6" Beam 11'4" Draft 4' plate up. Thames Tonnage 14TM   Construction Carvel planked in teak fastened with copper and bronze to Yacal hardwood steamed frames. External lead ballast keel fastened with mild steel keel bolts, last drawn in 2002. Some stainless steel keel bolts aft fitted in plastic sleeves. Centreplate made from Lignum Vitae lifts into a galvanised centreplate box. Raised with a manual winch in the saloon. Mix of sawn timber floors and galvanised straps. Yacht laid teak deck screwed and glued over a marine plywood subdeck. Deck re-fastened and re-payed in 1994. Varnished teak coachroof coamings with a painted plywood coachroof deck Self draining cockpit with scrubbed teak thwarts and sole. Wheel steering by a varnished teak spoked wheel with a brass Whitlock pedestal with rod and gear connections to the quadrant. 2 varnished teak gas bottle lockers either side at aft of cockpit.     Rig Bermudan yawl rig on deck stepped hollow varnished wooden masts. Mainmast new in 1999 made from Douglas Fir. Slab reefing varnished wooden booms. Stainless steel standing rigging, mainmast rigging new in 2016, to internal bronze and stainless chain plates. 3 mast winches and 2 pairs of cockpit sheet winches. Primary sheet winches are electric Andersen 46 which have aided the current owners with handling the yacht. Schaeffer 2100 roller furling system on the headsail, fitted in 1999. Mainsail and yankee new in 2015 from Saunders Sails. Mizzen new in 2014 from Saunders Sails. Numerous other sails including spinnaker, mizzen staysail and storm sails.     Machinery Mercedes-Benz OM636 42hp 4cyl marine diesel installed new in 1970. Meadows gearbox to a centreline fixed 3 blade bronze propeller gives 5 knots cruising speed, 7 knots max. Shaft-Lok shaft brake fitted in 2015. 40 gallon stainless steel fuel tank port side under the galley. 37 gallons of fresh water in 2 stainless tanks under starboard settee. dedicated engine start battery plus 2 x 12volt domestic batteries. Dedicated battery forward for anchor windlass and dedicated battery aft for electric sheet winches. All charged from engine alternator. Installed shore power system with 240 volt ring main. 2 x manual bilge pumps and 1 auto electric bilge pump.     Accommodation 5 berths including 2 comfortable singles in the forward cabin, saloon settee berth, pilot berth and a starboard side quarter berth. Steps down over the engine box with galley to port and chart space to starboard over the quarter berth. Galley has a gimballed Neptune 4500 2 burner gas stove with oven and grill. Single stainless sink with manually pumped fresh water. Good storage space around the galley, the engine box lid serves as a work surface. Chart desk folds down over the quarter berth with instruments outboard under the deckhead. Access door by the quarter berth into the cavernous starboard side cockpit locker from which easy access is found to the engine and steering gear. Main saloon has a fold out varnished teak saloon table slightly offset to port with U-shaped seating on the port side. Starboard side is a small settee and a pilot berth under the deckhead. Dickenson solid fuel cabin heater on forward bulkhead. Hanging oil lamps. Starboard side door going forward with he heads compartment to port. Simpson Lawrence Kentigern sea toilet discharges directly overboard. Stainless hand basin with manually pumped fresh water. To starboard is a hanging locker with shelves outboard. Forward cabin has two very comfortable single berths with drawer storage beneath and a cavernous locker between the berths. Forehatch above with 6'+ headroom.
