DESCRIPTION

Wooden Ships Comments on this Paul Gartside Yaquina Bay One Design

Yaquina Bay One Design dinghy designed by Paul Gartside and built by the current owner at the Lyme Regis Boatbuilding School in 2016.

An elegant dinghy with a lovely sheer line and generous beam making her very pretty but also fast and stable.

Very easy to rig up and get sailing with her unstayed cat rig. She also has an excellent condition combination road trailer and launching trolley making launch, recovery and transport very simple. Her spacious cockpit is both safe and comfortable.

This is a complete boat with trailer, oars and cover that has hardly been used since completion and remains in lovely condition.

Length on Deck 14

Beam 510

Draft board down 3

Sail area 99sqft

Construction

Clinker planked in marine plywood with epoxy glued lands. This modern form of building a clinker dinghy makes for a strong, rigid but light hull, is easy to maintain and does not dry out with subsequent leaking like a traditional clinker dinghy making it ideal for boats that are kept ashore and used periodically.

Laminated oak stem and keel with a solid oak transom made in 3 boards.

Marine plywood decks screwed and glued to the oak deck beams. Decks are overlaid with mahogany deck planking, glued to the plywood and seams caulked with Sikaflex.

Oak rubbing strake all round.

The large cockpit has an oak coaming that curves in towards the bow making an elegant cockpit. The coamings slant out ever so slightly making the cockpit very comfortable. A subtle feature that makes all the difference.

Oak thwarts and slatted sole boards.

Stainless steel centreplate lifts with a block and tackle, set in a marine plywood centreboard case.

Transom hung drop plate rudder with oak cheeks and a marine plywood blade. Bronze rudder hangings.

Bronze cleats and fairleads on deck.

Rig

Catboat rig with an unstayed mast stepped well forward in the boat.

Mast is built from sitka spruce and is hollow making it exceptionally light and easy to step with just one person.

Mast is keel stepped, sat on a mast step spanning 2 structural floors to spread the loads. A completely unstayed mast that is exceptionally easy and quick to set up.

Single sail of standing lug design with a high peak lug yard of varnished spruce.

Varnished spruce boom has an unusual arrangement for the jaws, whereby the jaws are set on one side of the boom rather than on its centreline.

Single halyard falls to a bronze belay pin by the coaming.

Mainsheet with tuffnel blocks makes off by themidships thwart.

Mainsail in cream terylene by Rowsell Sails. Battened sail with 2 reefing points.
