GENERAL:
NGONI is one of the most notable and cutting edge sailing yachts in the world!
Designed by Dubois Naval Architects. Impeccable build quality by Royal Huisman Shipyard.
Interior styling by Rick Baker Ltd.
“NGONI” was created for a knowledgeable sailing yachtsman who wanted a “fast and furious”, comfortable and luxurious, performance sailing yacht. Royal Huisman Shipyard delivered superb quality build combining a host of innovative engineering solutions to optimize her slender and powerful design characteristics. The reverse sheer is immediately noticeable and a trademark of “NGONI”. Initially an artistic design element which was further developed to offer structural hull stiffness and further aft translates into a striking concave sheer. A beautiful design that has resulted in a stiffer hull to allow for efficient performance from the powerful rig and massive sail area as well as better visibility from her driving stations aft.
“NGONI” exemplifies the owner’s desire for a very powerful sailing experience with finger touch feel and sailing enjoyment while also creating a minimalistic, elegant and comfortable yacht on which to spend long periods cruising. His “less is more” philosophy required a minimalistic approach to maximize reliability by reducing complexity while her overall aesthetic appeal is enhanced by aerodynamic efficiency and simplicity.
Significant emphasis was focused on the owner’s requirement for a light, firm steering sensation that was responsive and gave him the true feel of “NGONI” when under sail. As such a high aspect ratio rudder and a manual steering system without power assistance which was a huge challenge for a 58 meter sailing yacht with such a powerful sail plan. The result after enormous research is a balanced 75m2 carbon fiber rudder that delivers the finger touch control desired.
Intense research and analysis went into the development of the advanced and powerful carbon fiber rig and foils to efficiently support a square top mainsail of 853 m2 / 9182 ft2. Rondal and Carbolink collaborated to produce a rig package that spans 75m/245ft. above waterline using continuous carbon rigging. This is one of the 3 tallest single peice carbon masts in the world. Rondal also delivered a performance furling boom tailored to reflect the “simpler is better” design approach and styled to match the yachts aesthetic. North Sails trademark 3Di sails are fitted for a total upwind sail area of 1,950 m2 / 20,989 ft2 and downwind sail area of 3,093 m2 / 33,293 ft2.
The hull is built with Royal Huisman signature Alustar aluminum alloy incorporating a 96 tonne lifting “T” keel that allows 5.3m keel up draft while deploying to 8m keel down draft. The “submarine” anchoring system continues the functionally minimalistic design approach. This styling continues with unique aerodynamic rounded plumb bow section and the absence of a bow pulpit allowing for an expansive teak clad foredeck that expertly hides a carbon fiber hot tub, tender stowage and sail locker.
Her topsides are strikingly finished in a bespoke metallic topcoat color named “Claire de Lune” electrostatically coated to render a flawless finish. All metallic deck fittings are bead blasted titanium. Low profile applications to all deck fittings render a beautiful minimalistic consistency to the overall design. This approach translates from the expansive and unobstructed deck areas the gleaming black double-curved molded glass enclosed saloon.
The design concept was for a sailing yacht that is a “weapon” under sail while also being completely at home offering 5 star comfort and luxury below decks for her owner and guests was clearly and superbly achieved. Again the minimal approach to design exudes the interior layout. The guest areas in the raised saloon allow for a lounging area forward to port with a superbly crafted bar and more formal dining area to starboard. The transition between the forward enclosed saloon areas and the open – outdoor section of the saloon opens or closes seamlessly and offers climate controlled interior lounge/dining area as well as a completely open saloon when desired. Electrically opening glass side windows allow the aft section of the outdoor saloon protection from the elements. A large format flat screen pops up from the cockpit counter aft for movie nights.
Accommodations are well designed for maximum comfort for both the owner’s party and the crew. Each cabin and head have very large rectangular fixed portlights to allow in ambient light and views out. The colors and materials used throughout the yacht interior exude a rich yet understated elegance.
Owner’s and guest accommodation is accessed via a curving staircase from the deckhouse top the guest lobby area. There is a day head in this lobby area opposite the base of the stairs. A superbly appointed twin guest cabin with spacious bathroom to port and a double guest cabin with centered queen berth and Japanese bath to starboard. Both staterooms feature high quality exotic veneers, marbles and resin finishes. Large rectangular ports offer natural lighting.
The owners’ suite, aft, includes a full beam stateroom with bespoke built in furniture, twin doors to a large bathroom aft with twin sinks, tub and a shower room. A king bed on centerline has a settee and vanity/bureau on either side and a furniture housed lifting TV monitor on centerline. The owners stateroom has a superb white/grey marble head aft with large walk-in shower/steam room. A passage from the owners area aft and to starboard accesses a pantry area that also has a hydraulic opening deck staircase allowing private access to the aft deck for morning swims etc..
Forward on port is the self contained private office with convertible bed /couch and en suite head/shower. Opposite on starboard is a large glass enclosed gym with a large hydraulic opening port outboard in topsides. The Gym is scheduled to be converted to a 4th guest en suite guest stateroom later in 2021.
NGONI is a most uniquely well designed and executed performance sailing yacht for a private and discerning owner. This said if additional guest accommodations are needed, there is a concept drawing from the builder at Royal Huisman offering a 4th guest cabin with bathroom in place of the gym area.
