The Swan 48 S combines beautiful lines and sparkling performance with a luxurious and comfortable cruising layout, all superbly constructed by Nautor. The Frers designed 48 is fast becoming a sought after classic, with the S variant offering the best blend of regatta winning performance and all-round versatility, a thoroughbred racer, easily handled, and offering the seaworthiness and comfort required for serious bluewater cruising. 'Nala' is only in her third ownership and has been very well maintained, with recent upgrades including a Volvo Penta D2-75F engine (new 2018), North performance cruising sail wardrobe, standing rigging, and Garmin multi-screen navigation system adding to her impressive inventory which includes heating, electric winches and windlass, grey and black water holding tanks, watermaker and an inverter. For any future owner wishing to campaign, although predominantly cruised during her life, her second owner won the 2015 European Swan Regatta, proving her credentials, and a lightly used North Sails racing sail wardrobe including twin groove forestay, spinnaker poles and fittings are included. Presented in excellent order ready to enjoy, we feel that 'Nala' is likely to be one of the best of her kind, only for sale as her owner would like to move to a larger Swan.

Accommodation

The Swan 48 S layout offers six berths in three cabins, consisting of a luxurious owner's aft suite and twin guest cabins forward to port and starboard. Excellent standing headroom is provided throughout (most areas 6'2" or greater).

FORWARD HEADS - Located in a separate compartment with en suite access via either guest cabin. Fitted with a marine toilet, large washbasin with Corian surfaces, a mirror, and a shower with teak grating and pump out. A large opening hatch to the foredeck is ideal for fitting a scoop in hot climates, providing excellent ventilation to the forward cabins and saloon.

GUEST CABINS - Forward to port and starboard are two guest cabins, each with twin bunk berths fitted with lee cloths, large hanging lockers, opening deck hatches, en suite access to the heads, and separate doors to the saloon. These are ideal for bluewater sailing, with the option of using one cabin for additional stowage easily accessed via the forward hatch, and good sea berths for passage-making in poor conditions.

SALOON - The spacious saloon is laid out with a settee to port with a large teak dining table and two freestanding Nautor chairs (these can be secured for rough weather), offering comfortable room for six to dine together, with a further settee to starboard. Stowage is provided in a range of easily accessed lockers, cupboards, and shelves, whilst the long fixed portlights, small opening portlights, and hatch provide plenty of natural light and ventilation without compromising safety in heavy weather. Water and fuel tanks are located beneath the seating, providing appropriate tankage for long-distance cruising, whilst positioning the weight amidships, with the battery bank just forward countering the drivetrain weight further aft, creating a very well-balanced design for superb sea-keeping.

GALLEY - Aft to port is a large, dual-aspect linear galley equipped with a Force 10 4-burner gas cooker with oven, Siemens microwave, Iceberg dual fridge and freezer, large concealed sink, and Corian work surfaces providing ample space for food preparation. In addition to the pressurised water supply there is a back-up foot pump supply and a saltwater pump at the galley. A stainless steel grab bar with strap mounts is also provided for safety whilst underway, a range of cupboards allow for plenty of provisions, red night light, and an additional opening portlight gives extra ventilation.

NAVIGATION STATION - A forward-facing chart table is located to starboard of the forward companionway steps fitted with navigation equipment, electrical distribution panel, red night light, and storage. The compressor system for the fridge and freezer are located beneath the seat for easy access and maintenance.

AFT CABIN - The owner's cabin is accessed via a passageway to port, and fitted with a central island double berth (lee cloths could easily be added), hanging lockers, storage cupboards, and access to the en suite. Excellent ventilation is provided by the companionway hatch (and direct access to the cockpit via stowable steps) and four opening portlights.

EN SUITE - Equipped with a marine toilet, washbasin, shower area, Corian surfaces, storage, mirror, and an opening deck hatch. For marinas and protected anchorages the toilet can feed to a 45 litre black water holding tank, whilst the basin and shower can be fed to a 30 litre grey water holding tank.

GENERAL EQUIPMENT - Fitted out to an excellent standard by Nautor, with warm, traditional high-quality teak cabinetry, teak and holly sole boards, leatherette headlining, cream Alcantara upholstery, and complimenting curtains. All hanging lockers are fitted with automatic lighting, and all mirrors were replaced in 2020. Pressurised hot and cold water is supplied via a calorifier with an immersion coil for water heating. There are two water tanks fitted with a total capacity of 410 litres, which can be isolated from the Seafresh H206D watermaker which provides up to 120 litres per hour and is powered via the engine. A Mastervolt 2.5kw inverter provides mains power whilst underway to all sockets and the microwave. Eberspacher Hydronic heating system (serviced 2019) to all cabins and both heads keeps things warm, whilst Hella Turbo fans provide extra cooling.

Mechanical Systems

Located under the companionway steps in a soundproofed compartment, Volvo Penta D2-75F four-cylinder 75hp marine diesel engine (new 2018). Freshwater cooled via heat exchanger. Single lever controls with electric start. Gauges and system controls at helm. Two stainless steel fuel tanks with gauges and inspection hatches offer a combined capacity of 410 litres. Shaft drive via an MS2A 3.0:1 reduction gearbox to a Maxprop three-bladed feathering propeller (new 2019).

The engine was professionally replaced in 2018 with an upgraded, larger engine for extra durability, reduced noise, and improved fuel economy. It has run for 600hrs from new (will gradually increase as still in use), was last serviced in September 2019 for the 2020 season, and has been lightly used since.

Electrical Systems

24v 450ah Domestic battery bank and separate 110ah engine battery. The battery system is charged via a Mastervolt battery management system with a Balmar 100ah engine alternator and Mastervolt automatic battery charger. Shorepower system with Mastervolt ring mains, immersion coil for water heating, Mastervolt 2.5kw inverter for mains power whilst underway, and electrical distribution panel with battery condition indicators. Full cabin lighting with red night lighting at the navigation station and galley.

Construction

Swan 48 S 'Nala' is No.125 (25 of 57 built), designed by German Frers and built by Nautor Yachts, Finland in 1998. White hand-laid GRP hull (to expected Nautor excellent standards) with blue style stripes, superstructure, and teak-laid GRP decks. Hull epoxy-coated in 2015. Lead cast cruising draft fin keel. Wheel steering to spade hung rudder. Anodised aluminium toerails.

'Nala' (originally 'Matata', then 'Snatch') has clearly been maintained to an excellent standard throughout her life and in her current ownership has benefited from major refits to her navigation, mechanical, and sailing systems. This careful, professional maintenance shines through, and her overall condition would put many far newer yachts to shame! This is a rare opportunity to purchase a highly desirable cruising version of possibly the best all-round Nautor Swan model to date, proven by their regatta successes, they are already approaching classic status, meaning opportunities for ownership are likely to become less frequent.
