Boat Description
The Edel Cat 35 Sport from Edel Strat in France features low, sleek lines and a modern look. It has a simple, manageable rig designed for easy and efficient sailing and living aboard. This all-out cruiser/racer boasts excellent speed, combining a racy fractional rig with good hull stability, low aspect ratio keels, and a spacious interior. An unusual feature is the layout with separately-accessed accommodations in the hulls and bridgedeck, making it comfortable for family cruising and island hopping.
Construction
The Edel 35 is an attractive design and is solidly built. Three 8x9-inch oval aluminum tubes with substantial wall thickness connect the hulls. These beams are mechanically attached to the hulls with massive clamps and bolts located by saddles molded into the hulls. The bow and stern cross tubes join the hulls at the sheer line, while the central tube is raised to the hull top deck level for increased headroom inside the hulls.
The bridgedeck is suspended between the hulls on the central and aft cross beams and bolted to the hulls. The foredeck features a large expanse of open netting or trampoline. The deck/hull joint forms a massive overhanging lip that supports a substantial rub rail. The hulls are symmetrical U sections with low aspect ratio keels and skeg attached rudders, allowing for swapping of the port and starboard hulls. The three separate independent modules are a desirable feature, ensuring that even if one hull is holed and flooded, the boat will still float.
The Edel hulls are constructed of foam cored fiberglass. The interior bulkheads and some furniture items are plywood, while all exterior components are fiberglass. Interior hull liners are fiberglass and made as separate components depending on location. Wood ladders provide access to the port and starboard hulls, with small cubbyholes for storage between steps. Cold molded plywood with graceful curves is used throughout for shelving and cabinetry.
Features
Mambo is outfitted with a bimini top that covers the entire cockpit area and both companionways, allowing movement between hulls and the bridgedeck cabin under the canvas. The companionways run fore and aft alongside the bridgedeck cabin, providing a wide, secure walkway for going forward. The decks around the mast offer flat areas for secure footing.
The three separate modules provide for three separate living areas:
- Main Center Cabin - featuring the galley and dinette with seating for 6-8.
- Port Hull - 2 cabins; one fore and one aft with washroom (no toilet, can be added for guests).
- Starboard Hull - 2 cabins; one fore and one aft with head.
