Wooden Ships Comments on this Hillyard 9 Ton Bermudan Sloop

32’ Bermudan sloop 9 ton Hillyard designed and built by Hillyards of Littlehampton in 1968.

Bought by the current owner in 2010, she had been laid up for several years and the current owner undertook a years thorough refit with a professional shipwright on the Isle of Wight. The ballast keel was dropped off, part of the wooden keel replaced and all new keel bolts. The hull was stripped to bare wood, 3 planks per side replaced, completely re-caulked and re-fastened where necessary. The mast was rebuilt with new wiring and new rigging.

Most recently in 2021 she had a professional cosmetic refit, halyards replaced and Baby Blake sea toilet refitted.

Several areas of damage have been discovered which will require repair work this spring and the boat has been price at an attractive level in accordance with this work. the forward cabin coaming has significant areas of rot, the chain plates are corroded and the top of the stern post is soft which in turn has led to a small area of soft deck plywood and some areas of soft in the hood ends of the top 2 planks. None of this will stop a new owner sailing the boat away as she is, there is much of this boat which is in excellent order so with these small repairs done she will be a fine yacht.

A nice example of the design with a thorough refit history from the present ownership. Sensibly priced yacht perfect for family cruising
