About this Custom Brixham Sailing Trawler

Wooden Ships Comments on this Brixham Sailing Trawler Built by Sanders and Co of Galmpton near Brixham in 1924 as a Mule Class Brixham sailing trawler. She was launched as the replacement for an identical ship sunk by the Germans during the First World War as she was rescuing survivors from the wreck of HMS Formidable. Provident worked as a sailing trawler with a crew of 3 men and boy for six years before being bought by a wealthy American and converted to a yacht by Morgan Giles of Teignmouth. Between 1930 and 1951 she changed hands several times, crossed the Atlantic on numerous occasions and spent time in the Med. She was then bought by the founder of the Island Cruising Club, John Baylay which was the start of her commercial charter sailing career that has continued until the present day under various organisations. Provident is best known by many from her time in Salcombe with the ICC but since 1998 has sailed under the Trinity Sailing Foundation providing cruising holidays and sail training for disadvantaged young people. Between 1986 and 1990 she was given a major rebuild but in more recent times has been subject to ongoing professional maintenance with a recent new deck and main engine. She is currently coded under the MCA to Cat 2 and is being sold with all the necessary gear and equipment to work under those regulations.
