40’ McGruer Yawl designed and built by McGruer and Co. In 1962.

She was built for a serial owner of McGruer yachts, and in the words of James McGruer, she was designed to be “a healthy, easily handled, comfortable cruising yacht of handsome appearance. With no consideration given to the measurement rules of the day the

Design has a natural flow resulting in longer overhangs, more balanced ends and a drier bow when compared to other designs which tended to feature pinched ends to maximise ratings. On deck she features the stylised ‘McGruer doghouse’ giving her that instantly recognisable McGruer silhouette.

With her current owners since 2007 she has benefitted from significant ongoing investment throughout this ownership. Now reluctantly offered for sale due to ill health she is offered for sale with a comprehensive inventory including:

Construction

  • Carvel planked in 1” teak planking below the waterline, mahogany planking above. Seams caulked and splined for a fair finish.
  • Bronze screw fastened into laminated mahogany frames with 2 steamed intermediate timbers.
  • Afromosia keel and stern post with laminated mahogany stem.
  • Lead ballast keel fastened with bronze keel bolts.
  • Timber floors across the centreline made from afromosia and oak.
  • Yacht laid teak deck new in 2010. Teak is epoxy glued to the plywood subdeck. Varnished teak king plank and margin boards.
  • Varnished teak covering boards and toe rails all round with stainless steel stanchions.
  • Varnished mahogany coachroof coamings with a sheathed plywood coachroof deck. 2 elegant butterfly skylights on the coachroof.
  • Self draining cockpit with mahogany coamings and scrubbed teak sole grating. Wheel steering on cables to the quadrant.

Rig

  • The rig was renewed completely with new masts built in 2021 by Noble Spars, new standing rigging in 2022 and the new rig commissioned in 2023.
  • Bermudan yawl rig on keel stepped hollow wooden main mast.
  • Varnished wooden slab reefing booms on main and mizzen.
  • Stainless steel standing rigging, new on the main mast in 2022.
  • Furlex roller reefing system for the headsail.

Machinery

  • Volvo Penta MD2030 3cyl 29hp diesel engine. Serviced Autumn 2023.
  • Mechanical gearbox to a centreline Flex-o-Fold 3 blade folding propeller, gives 5 knots cruising speed.
  • 100 litre diesel tank.
  • 2 x 12 volt batteries for domestic systems and engine start. Both batteries new in 2022.
  • Charging from engine alternator. Cristec 10amp battery charger connected to installed shore power system.
  • 2 x manual bilge pumps. 1 x Whale SuperSub auto electric bilge pump.
  • 2 x water tanks with total capacity of 180 litres.

Accommodation

  • 6 berths including a double in the forward cabin, 2 saloon settee berths, saloon pilot berth and a quarter berth.
  • Forward Cabin:
  • Two single berths, located outboard to port and starboard
  • Access to chain locker forward of berths with storage shelf units outboard of access to port and starboard
  • Single triangular seat between bunks forward
  • Standing room between bunks aft
  • Drawer and locker storage beneath aft end of bunks.
  • Hanging locker with counter top above aft of bunks, outboard to port and starboard
  • Heads:
  • To port at forward end of saloon
  • Aft facing manual marine toilet located inboard forward

  • Centrally mounted, double drop lead saloon table, storage within central section of table, accessible from forward and aft end of table.
  • Bench settees top port and starboard. Back rests folding outboard to increase bunk width when required. Backrests can also lift to provide access to storage shelfs.
  • Pilot berths above and outboard of port settee.
  • Counter top outboard of starboard settee with shelf above and locker aft.
  • Locker doors fitted to settee bases to provide access to storage space without lifting cushions
  • Galley:
  • Located to starboard side of companionway.
  • Gimbal mounted Wallas cooker forward
  • Compact working area around cooker with section between cooker and sink fitted with drain.
  • Worktop sections outboard lifting to provide access to storage space beneath galley
