DESCRIPTION

37’ bermudan sloop 12 ton Hillyard built in 1960 by David Hillyard of Littlehampton.

Major refits in 1993 and 2004 covered a lot of serious jobs and were all well documented. Currently on the water but in need of some work to bring her back up to scratch. In the present ownership she has new sails (2015 AND 2020), standing rigging (2017), re-wired (2017), rebuilt engine (2022) and new navigation equipment (2019)

Very practical and comfortable design of yacht with 6 good berths in 3 separate cabins and a large safe central cockpit. These boats are not going to win races but they will look after the crew and get them around in safety and comfort.

This 12 ton model is far less common than some of the other Hillyards and is a good compromise of length and volume.

Construction

  • Carvel planked in mahogany copper rivet fastened to steam bent oak timbers. Every second timber is laminated to double thickness.
  • Oak back bone and deadwoods with an external cast iron ballast keel. Fastened with iron bolts, 5 replaced in 2004. 1.25 tons of internal iron ballast as is common with Hillyards.
  • Oak floors across the centreline fastened through the planking with large copper rivets.
  • Marine plywood deck sheathed externally in epoxy glass cloth. Deck all new in 1993.
  • Varnished mahogany toe rail carried on the galvanised stanchion bases as is common on most Hillyards. Iroko rubbing strake all round.
  • Fore and aft coachroof with centre cockpit that is enclosed with a canvas sprayhood and cover. Varnished mahogany coachroof coamings with bronze portlights.
  • Coachroof decks of marine plywood sheathed in epoxy glass cloth. Varnished mahogany hand rails.
  • Cockpit is very deep, safe and sheltered. Thwart locker either side with the engine space below the cockpit sole.
  • Wheel steering positioned on the aft cockpit bulkhead with cables to the rudder quadrant.
  • Sliding mahogany doors into the fore and aft accommodation. Spray hood and cover on a stainless frame make the cockpit totally enclosed.

Rig

  • Masthead Bermudan sloop rig on a deck stepped varnished mast. In usual Hillyard fashion the mast is square hollow section and was new in 2011.
  • Varnished wooden roller reefing boom operated by a lever and ratchet mechanism at the goose neck.
  • Stainless steel standing rigging all new in 2017 to external galvanised chain plates.
  • Furlex 304S roller reefing headsail system fitted new in 2015.
  • Mainsail new in 2020 from Quay Sails, Poole. Genoa new in 2015 from Quay Sails, Poole.
  • Mainsail cover new in 2012 from Quay Sails, Poole.

Machinery

  • Volvo Penta MD22L 55hp 4cyl fresh water cooled diesel engine installed new in 2001. Rebuilt by Purbeck Marine in September 2022.
  • Single lever controls with a centreline stainless shaft to a fixed 3 blade bronze propeller.
  • 70 gallon stainless steel fuel tank port side in the engine space.
  • 3 x 12 volt batteries charged from the engine alternator.
  • 75 gallon galvanised water tank to starboard in the engine space.
  • Boat largely re-wired in 2017.
