Doug Peterson Design

In the early 70’s the young and brilliant engineer Doug Peterson of San Diego, a skilled sailor and racing yachtsman, works in the yacht design office of Skip Calkins, traditionally linked to Nat Herreshoff and Nik Potter's great designing school. Thanks to  the many victories  with “Legend” a yacht designed by Calkins and inspired to Herreshoff experiences , Doug elaborated the ideas of a lighter displacement level class , with short overhangs and long floating line . He dedicated a long time to the study of the lead keel and rudder blade and to a strong and easy building. Peterson at the age of 28 builds on a budget his first racer with the plan of taking part to the American selection for the One Ton Cup. Ganbare was built in the shipyard of  Carl Eichenlaub , famous for building the best Star racers. The limited budget allowed only  4  winches .The boat looked a lot smaller than the other one tonners, but the real difference is in the hull design . She won the selections and was shipped to Italy to take part to the One Ton Cup at that time the display window of the best racers in the world. Unfortunately the crew misunderstand the race instructions in the long race and Ganbare collected  a DNF .She won all the other 5 races of the race week, but it was not be enough to win the Cup, that will be won by Admiral Tino Straulino on Hydra a Dick Carter design . Straulino however has always declared that Ganbare was the real winner and the fastest boat.

Olin Stephens, who followed the races on a motor launch had to admit: “I never saw a boat that impressed me more”. Ganbare was sold immediately after the Cup to a famous Italian yachtsman who kept on winning every race for long time. Doug Peterson returned home with the order of 5 new designs!
