DESCRIPTION

Wooden Ships Comments Designed by Ewing McGruer and built by McGruers of Clynder on the Clyde, Scotland in 1929. This yacht was built for a Dr Carslaw, a founding member of the Clyde cruising Club and launched as Rowan 11 in 1929. Dr Carslaw had 2 boats built by McGruers. Dr Carslaw wrote about his sailing exploits around the West Coast of Scotland in his 4 yachts in a lovely little book – Leaves from Rowan’s Log. Rowan lV shares a recognisable feature with Judith/Rowan ll, the dog-house, which is not typical of McGruer’s work and must have been a special request from Dr Carslaw on both yachts. One can understand that the dog-house on both boats must have been a great advantage sailing in the Scottish climate. Sold by Wooden Ships to the last 2 owners, most recently in 2019. After this sale the boat was given to a yard and a substantial amount of professional refit work was carried out. Sadly ill health forced the owner to stop the work, and now after the sad death of the owner, the yacht is being sold by his estate. A detailed survey was carried out in 2019 identifying numerous repairs required. A very accurate account of exactly what repairs were done was recorded by the yard and is available for any prospective purchaser to read so it is possible to ascertain quite accurately the extent of the work required to get her back into shape. At 11 TM this is a very sweet yacht with a fine bow and a lovely elliptical counter stern. The work done recently has been a huge benefit to her longevity but there is much more to do and she requires a new owner with time and enthusiasm to carry this work on.   Length on deck 38’ Lwl 28’ Beam 9’6” Draft 5’8” Thames Tonnage 11TM Construction Planked in 1.25" Pitch Pine fastened with bronze screws to 3" x 3" sawn oak frames. 2 steamed intermediate timbers copper rivet fastened. Galvanise steel strap floors bolted through the sawn frames. Straight laid T&G pine deck sheathed in epoxy glass cloth, all new sheathing in 2020. Varnished teak doghouse and cockpit coamings. Deep and spacious self draining cockpit with a sliding door into the dog house. Doghouse roof newly sheathed in 2020. Wheel steering with a bronze rack type steering system. Hull has been stripped to bare wood below the waterline, several isolated plank repairs done as necessary and several cracked frames replaced. Hull painted and antifouled before launch.     Rig Masthead bermudan ketch rig on keel stepped varnished wooden masts. Slab reefing main boom, roller reefing mizzen boom. Stainless steel standing rigging, new in 2001, to internal galvanised chain plates. Some chain plates recently replaced in stainless steel. The majority of the fitting has been completed however. Galley stove and gas system has been removed prior to fitting a complete new system which was not done.
