When the Adams family wanted a versatile, attractive craft they approached Will Stirling to build them something beautiful and usable in many locations. Grebe is the result of this collaboration and is now presented at Beale Park boat store as new with outboard, sails, oars and lots of specialist detailing which makes this craft really delightful to own. In fact the boat is a work of art which any boat lover would be thrilled to own.

Recently there were six passengers on board for Henley Festival and the owner used only oar power ! I think that the addition of an electric outboard to replace the 2.3 hp Honda outboard would be a bonus personally although the Honda is of course a good alternative and comes as part of the package. The trailer incorporates a launching trolley for ease of use.

The draft is just 1ft but there is of course the centreplate and lifting rudder for more serious sailing. As you would expect of a traditional wooden lugger the boat is built of clinker mahogany on oak with varnished floor, topsides and decks while the interior woodwork is treated with an oil rather than varnish.

There is a valid 2019 EA Thames licence should a new owner wish to use the boat on the Thames although Grebe would be equally happy on a lake or estuary.

GREBE was beautifully built in 2016 for the present owners by Will Stirling at his yard in Devonport Dockyard. She makes an ideal family boat, well suited to a wide variety of uses. At 14ft overall (4.27m.) she will fit in a standard garage on her trailer and can be sailed, rowed or used with an outboard motor. The combi trailer, easily towed by a family car, has a winch and the launching trolley rolls off the road trailer for easy launch and recovery.

The hull is of mahogany clinker construction on oak and Grebe is rigged as a lugger with two reefs in the sail, but also has a small jib which is perfect for downwind sailing in stronger winds. She has two rowing positions, a heavy centreboard and a sculling notch on the transom as well as a protective hide and teak ‘glove’ for the transom when using with an outboard motor.

Grebe, lightly used from new, has been kept indoors and under her cover when not in use, and has had a full refit and re-varnish in June 2019.
