Designed by Laurent Giles with the first example launched in 1972, the Westerly Longbow is a solid traditional fin keel cruiser. As with all Westerlys of the period, they were built to Lloyds specifications which meant that the building processes were rigorously monitored and all materials had to be approved by Lloyds in order that a certificate could be issued. Although now long out of production they still offer an excellent combination of solid construction, performance under sail and accommodation space.

The Longbow has a theoretical hull speed of 7.5 knots under sail and about 6.5 knots under engine. Dependant on weather conditions, a 5 knot average for passage planning is easily obtained. The cockpit is deep, the side-decks are wide and the whole set-up on deck is very reassuring. The engine compartment, which is spacious, is easily accessible from the cockpit hatch and the main saloon.

Accommodation

The interior has a conventional forecabin with vee-berths, shelving and under-berth storage. There is a separate heads compartment between the forecabin and saloon with a spacious wet locker opposite.The saloon table can be dropped to form a double berth if required. Opposite this is another settee berth. Finally there are twin quarterberths aft, giving a total of up to seven berths.

The saloon has a central table with an L-shaped settee berth to port and a straight berth to stbd, with good storage behind backrests and under seating.

There is 6'1” headroom and the large saloon windows create a bright interior.

The options of shorepower and an Eberspacher diesel heater mean comfort is assured in port or at anchor whatever the weather.

Galley

The galley is forward at the main bulkhead. The cooker is a gimballed Flavel Vanessa with two burners, grill and oven. The stainless steel sink is served with pressurised hot & cold water. There is a cool box and many storage lockers for supplies and cooking utensils.

The galley is supplied with a full inventory of pots, pans, cooking equipment, crockery and cutlery.

Deck Equipment Engine

Guillemot was re-engined with a new Beta Marine 25hp diesel engine in 2011.

This engine has a well-deserved reputation for reliability and economy, and is easily accessible if necessary. Fuel consumption is two to three litres per hour with a maximum hull speed of seven knots available and the ability to cruise comfortably at six knots for hour after hour if required. The engine drives a calorifier which provides pressurized hot water to the galley.

Safety Equipment

All boats available for charter have to be coded. This requires the provision of a very high level of safety equipment and a rigourous annual inspection.

Guillemot will be coded to Category 2 for charter, which certifies her to operate up to 60nm from a safe haven. In practice this means that she is legally certified to go anywhere you could possibly reach on your charter.

The safety equipment includes, flares, an automatic engine fire extinguishing system, lifejackets for all crew (inspected annually) plus spare lifejackets, plus a 'grab bag' with additional safety equipment. There are electric and manual bilge pumps and a DSC VHF radio.

Guillemot was built to Loyds A1 standard, the very highest standard of yacht construction.
