They don't build 'em like they used to!
This yacht was commissioned by ball bearing magnate WR Timken (at a cost of between $600,000-$700,000 in the early seventies), supposedly to dominate in the prestigious Canada's Cup Competition, a series of match races between US yacht clubs and Canadian yacht clubs in the Great Lakes. Mr. Timken enlisted famous yacht designer, Ted Hood, who designed the vessel and oversaw all aspects of production at his yard; Little Harbor, in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Although the same hull mold was later used for the Hinckley '43, this vessel has the notable differentiation of having a whale-bottom design with Kevlar reinforcement, a 12 foot hydraulic swing keel and 6 foot spade rudder. In addition to spectacular upwind performance with the keel fully deployed, the keel could be raised to any height desired when sailing downwind or to clear shoals. Apparently, the governing body for the competition found out about the "trick" keel design before she was launched and penalized the vessel so heavily that she could no longer be competitive. Mr. Timken then donated her to the Naval Academy, where she was used for training. She was later owned (and obsessed over) by an FBI agent for decades. The current owner has upgraded the running rigging, tuned up the engine, and continues to prove her timeless design, most recently winning the pursuit class at Charleston Race week in 2017.
