DESCRIPTION

Gabbiano Azzuro ( Blue Gull) is a classic later model (1986) Nauticat 33 ketch rigged pilot house motorsailer. Built by Siltala Yachts in Finland and designed by Aarnipalo. Many experienced sailors would argue that the Nauticats are one of the finest examples of Pilot House Motorsailers built.

The double ended solid fiberglass roomy hull is a ketch rig (a two-masted sailboat that has a mainmast front and shorter mizzenmast aft or back). Both masts carry a mainsail. She has a deep fin keel (draft 5ft) and a skeg-hung rudder. This design is capable of inland waters cruising or coastal / ocean passage making. Her freeboard is a generous 5ft. The double end design allows for a very spacious interior (10ft 8in beam) with 2 staterooms, galley, salon / pilot house and head. Bridge clearance is 41ft. Powered by the workhorse Ford Lehman Super 90 and swinging a 3 blade 22in x 16in prop she has a cruising speed under power of 8 knots (hull speed) and in a light to moderate wind she can motorsail at a consistent 7 knots. Under just sail, 5 knots is reported. The engine was removed and given a complete overhaul by a very experienced diesel mechanic in the winter of 2021 and reinstalled in April of 2021. She was fresh bottom paint and zincs 11/2020.

This vessel had extensive exterior work done by Bluewater Yacht's yard in Wanchese, NC in 2015 when the current owners purchased her. Yard work included hull blister repair, stepped down mask rigging redone, new prop, toilet, and rebuilt pilot house doors. Then the newly retired owner began to retrofit and update the interior. His untimely death did not allow the retrofit completion; however, most wiring was redone, upholstery, and much more. Most of the internal systems are reported operational. Know items to be finished are repairs to the ceiling starboard aft passageway due to a vent leaking. Leak has been repaired. Deck is solid fiberglass not cored. Vessel was equipped with bladder style house water tanks which have been removed thus house water system needs to be repaired. Bright work inside and out needs attention. Gabbiano Azzuro has the potential to make an excellent cruiser or live aboard with the heavy lifting of complete engine overall completed. Looking for caring new owners to enjoy this classic vessel.   New listing additional information to be added.   Yachting Monthly article June 2021 on the Nauticat 33 please copy and paste to your browser:   MAIN DESCRIPTION

Manufactures Description when in production

The Nauticat 33 has now been in production for almost 30 years, but she still continues to surprise and delight all newcomers, both experienced yachtsmen and those venturing afloat for the very first time. The effortless operation, superb comfort and careful arrangement of interiors, making use of all available space to the best advantage, has created a demand for this boat, resulting in over 1,000 hulls built so far. In addition to the original long-keel version, the Nauticat 33 is also available with the fin keel and skeg underwater section and new taller rig, resulting in improved performance under sail. This design is more suited to the yachtsman looking for more versatility than the average motorsailer concept allows. The hull is all hand-lay-up GRP construction using alternate layers of mat and woven roving. There are longitudinal stringers and transverse floor members in appropriate areas. All structural bulkheads are teak-faced marine plywood, securely bonded to the hull. The internal iron-lead ballast is heavily fibreglassed into the hull. The deck and superstructure are of 100 per cent hand-lay-up GRP construction. Decks have an anti-slip finish. All exterior trim, including handrails and the overhead hatch trim, are of teak. All windows are of toughened safety glass suspended in alloy frames. There are dual steering stations, one in the wheelhouse and one on the aft deck. The rudder is made of fibreglass, the rudder stock of acid-proof steel. There is emergency steering by way of a tiller connected directly to the rudder stock. The interior joinery is of satin varnished teak, fitted to highest yacht-building standards. The pilothouse features a steering position with full instrumentation. Ventilation is provided by a large sunroof type hatch, and the two pilothouse doors port and star board.
