DESCRIPTION

'Fahyda' is the most famous of the sought after Scarborough One Design classic yachts, popular for their classic lines similar to the Blackwater Sloop yet offering much improved cruising accommodation. As well as having an enviable racing history, Fahyda has also been very well kept, including a keel up restoration costing circa £40k completed in 2002 which included a new deck and engine, together with many other fittings and works. Since then she has been well maintained and is believed to be in very good structural order, just in need of her seasonal brightwork and general ongoing maintenance. An ideal opportunity to own a well-sorted classic yacht of a manageable size at a very reasonable price!

Viewing by appointment only through our Essex office on +.

Additional Comments

An extensive keel-up restoration was carried out over three years by the highly-regarded Coombes boatyard, completed in 2002 costing circa £40k. As well as work to her structure including new decks this also included other systems such as a new engine, interior upgrades, Blakes seacocks, and more, restoring her to excellent condition. Since then she has been maintained to a high standard, and although now in need of brightwork and some cosmetic tidying, she is likely to be one of (if not) the best of her class in existence. An impressive folder covering her restoration and history is included within the sale and her providence is well established.

Although rarely raced as a class now, she was by far the most successful of her kind including in open competition, with an impressive racing record in her early years. As such, although not raced in recent years, she could also appeal to someone wanting to compete in classic regattas. Similarities can instantly be drawn to the popular Blackwater Sloops, sharing similar lines, a modest draft, and sea kindly manners. Their capabilities are certainly well-proven, as 'Kathena', a 23ft sloop designed and built by John Hey, was sailed by the famous German sailor Wilfried Erdmann on his first world circumnavigation, which was also the first German solo-circumnavigation!

Only for sale due to lack of time to use as her owner is starting a new business venture, any required works can be organised locally at very competitive rates for her new owner.

Construction

Fahyda is a Scarborough One Design (a popular post-war design class) designed and built in 1950 by John Ley, an established racing dinghy and yacht designer. Carvel construction with pine planking, copper fastened to steam-bent oak frames. Epoxy sheathed marine plywood decks (new 2001). Steel compression frame below the mast. Heavy oak floors with additional iron straps. Long keel with cast iron ballast keel (shot blasted and epoxy coated in 2010, keel bolts renewed 1993 and checked in 1999). Tiller steering to transom and keel hung rudder.
