The Rival 38 offers 7 berths in 3 cabins. Below, there is full headroom throughout. The saloon has an extendable teak table, a double and a single settee berth, and two strong and comfortable roll-away pipe coats, which make excellent sea berths. Most berths are fitted with lee cloths. There are two dorade vents, and fans and LED lights throughout. There is a large navigation station to starboard, with full-sized chart table, ample chart storage, bookshelves, and instruments.
The practical galley is fitted with a 12v seawater cooled fridge and freezer, a stainless-steel gimballed Force 10 cooker with 2 burners, oven and grill, and a double sink with electric and manual water supply. Hot water is provided by a stainless steel calorifier, and there is a safety strap for rough weather.
The aft cabin has two roomy single berths, and the adjacent aft head is fitted with a Blakes Zenith sea toilet and a shower.
The forward head has an 12v electric Blakes Zenith sea toilet, a sink and a large hanging locker.
The forepeak is currently used as sail stowage and workshop. This could easily be used as a cabin with the addition of bunk cushions, with a considerable amount of stowage throughout. Heated throughout via an Eberspacher D2.
The deep, secure cockpit has a comfortable helming position and plenty of seating and locker space, with a roomy lazarette. There is a removable varnished teak cockpit table, a sunbrella sprayhood with Strataglass windows, and a removable bimini on a strong frame, which also supports two 130w solar panels.
'Islay of Lorn' is a fine example of the aft cabin version of the Rival 38. She returned to the UK in 2018 after an extended circumnavigation, during which she proved herself to be a comfortable live-aboard yacht, and a reliable and safe passage-maker in all conditions. She is very strongly built, with elegant and purposeful lines, and has an easy motion at sea with a light and responsive helm. The cockpit is deep and safe, with ample handholds and strong points for harnesses. She sails well under cruising chute or spinnaker in light airs and handles severe weather confidently under triple reefed main and reefed staysail, and when the going gets rough will heave-to securely. She is well set up for safe shorthanded sailing, with a powerful autopilot and a comprehensive integrated suite of modern electronic aides. She is equipped with an Aires 'Circumnavigator' windvane, the best version of the famous steering gear. She has proved equally at home charging down the Pacific NE Tradewinds, cruising the Mediterranean and motoring through French canals.
The Rival 38A designed by Peter Brett, built by Southern Boatbuilders of Southampton. White GRP hull (original gel coat) blue deck and coachroof with teak toe rail. Traditional full long encapsulated keel with skeg hung rudder and Whitlock Cobra wheel steering.
The Rival 38 is rigged as a masthead Bermudian sloop, anodised deck stepped mast and boom with spinnaker pole. Slab reefing with stackpack (North), furling headsail (Profurl NC42). Stainless steel standing rigging (2014)
