Dragonfly is a Kurt Hughes design with long waterline and 4’ bridge deck clearance and twin dagger boards making her fast and comfortable. The fiberglass composite construction using Corecell, Triaxial glass and Epoxy resin make her relatively light at 17 tons.

Dragonfly was built in the USA and could be inspected for USCG Certification. Dragonfly is set up to be single handed with all lines coming to the helm station making it easy with the electric winches.

Dragonfly is a one-owner boat, splashed in 1998 and used for cruising and charters operated by the owner. The spacious salon with the four queen-size berths, three head/showers and double twin forward bunks made it possible to comfortably carry up to 12 people. The large u-shaped galley with 4-burner stove, oven and 12 c/f freezer made cooking for a crowd easy. The finish is comfortable and basic. Nothing fancy, making it easy to maintain and have strangers on board. The large swim step
makes for a safe transition between the dinghy and the boat and a great platform for divers and snorkelers.

The majority of the time Dragonfly was in the Caribbean, but after 16 years of cruising the owners decided to “Sail with a Purpose” and take Dragonfly to the South Pacific where Dragonfly transported nurses, doctors, dentists and others to the remote islands providing free medical services.

Due to Dragonfly’s sailing speeds of 8-17 knots, the passages on the 9000 mile trip went quickly and comfortably. With her shallow draft of 3.5’ we could take advantage of calm shallow anchorages that many others couldn’t. The 1400 watts of solar panels took care of electrical needs during the day and well into the evening when underway. Prior to the trip Dragonfly was refitted with new re-manufactured Yanmar 4jh2-hte engines.

Specification

Dragonfly is a 64' x 31' catamaran designed by Kurt Hughes. She is a great sailing vessel with twin daggerboards and large forward crash bulkhead. An aft bulkhead separates the engine room from the living space and the built in tankage creates a vessel that is unsinkable. The bridge deck clearance is 48" so wave slaps are very infrequent.

Since Dragonfly was launched we have sailed many times between New York, Florida, Virgin Islands, Venezuela and the Western Caribbean. We also sailed to Fiji and then to Hawaii and San Francisco, so she is a well-tested vessel. Dragonfly was built 100% in the USA and could be inspected for USCG CERTIFICATION. Kurt Hughes could perform the calculations and data presentations to do that.

Dragonfly hulls were made in a mold and vacuum bagged using Corecell structural foam using tri-axial glass and epoxy. This creates a hull that will not decompose and is extremely strong. During construction we did get USCG approval of the beam scantlings with some of the highest USCG composite test sample numbers of any that Kurt Hughes was involved with at that time.

The composite decks and cabin sides are made of fiberglass/marine plywood/balsa core, bonded and vacuum bagged with epoxy. The salon windows on each side are 1/4" tempered glass. The forward windows are lexan and acrylic with inset hatches on the two center sections, for airflow.

Equipment Details

Engines: Twin Yanmar 4JH2-HTE diesels rated at 76hp each. The engines were re- manufactured in December 2013 prior to leaving for the South Pacific. They have approximately 1400 hours on them. The port engine had a complete overhaul in July 2018 replacing all bearings, seals, and rings. The cylinders were honed and valves lapped.

Generator: A platform in the engine room is ready for a generator, with the electrical infrastructure to support a 8-10 KVA unit.

Fuel capacity: A total of 350 gallons. This consists of 85-gallon tanks in each hull and 18-gallon day tanks located aft over the engine compartment. There are also reserve 75-gallon tanks that were rarely used, but were available for those times when we would be in remote areas without access to fuel. Pumps are in place to transfer fuel from the reserve tank to the main tank and to the day tank.

Batteries: 8 deep cycle batteries for the house, two starter batteries for the engines, and 2 additional batteries dedicated to the windlass

Inverter: 2500 watt true sine wave inverter with 120 volt receptacles throughout the salon, galley, berths and storage spaces.

Steering: Hydraulic steering with a hydraulic link between each rudder.

Autopilot 1: Comnav A1500 with control units at both helms. This autopilot, new in April 2015, allows steering to a lat/long location, a heading, or an apparent wind angle.

Autopilot 2: Comnav 1420 is a back-up unit that allows steering on a heading only. This was new as of 2013.

Instrumentation: the instrumentation consists of Comnav depth, speed, wind and gps transducers. These are connected to 3 displays at each helm and also connected to a wifi router that allows all of the data to be displayed on an iPad anywhere on the vessel. This means you can take the iPad to your berth and monitor position, wind speed, and motion quickly.

Safety: Two EPIRB's, and fire extinguishers are located in the salon, galley and in each hull

Solar Power: Two banks of solar panels. One bank is on the arch over the dinghy davits with six-100 watt panels. The other bank is on the hard cockpit top another 800 watts.

Wind Generator: Two Apollo 650 watt generators.

Rigging: The mast is an aluminum section that had been USCG certified thru 2017
when it was installed on dragonfly. The dimensions are 75’ x 12” x 8” with double diamond spreaders added. The rigging was replaced with 9/16" 1x19 wire using Hayn swageless fittings in 2017 before sailing back from Hawaii.

Winches: Lewmar 48 electric, Lewmar 48 for traveler control, Lewmar 44, Lewmar 40, also a size 40 electric used for furling headsails. All lines feed back to the helm station so that raising, reeling, furling or lowering all sails can be done without leaving the helm station.

Windlass: Electric windlass is located in the forward anchor locker with remote switches. It has a new gearbox and motor as of 2013.

Anchors: 120lb claw type with 300' of 3/8" chain acquired in 2014 and a 50lb delta on a rope rode.

Sails: Headsail is on a Harken Mark 2 furler. The mast is equipped with Harken big boat batt-cars model C. The forestay is on a bowsprit and has a 3/8" 1x19 wire with swageless fittings. The gennaker or code "0" has not been replaced so that the new owner can determine exactly what they would like. The mainsail also needs to be replaced. The new owner can make the decision on the type of sail depending upon intended use.

Water: A 2015 Spectra Cape Horn Extreme watermaker that produces up to 15 gallons per hour and there are 50 gallon fresh tanks in each hull. This unit operates on 12 volts D.C. and only uses 19 amps so it can be run using solar power.

Water Heaters: 2 propane gas water heaters, one in each hull.
Heads: 3 electric heads, two in the starboard hull and one in the port hull. These can be directed to an onboard waste tank or overboard depending upon your location.

Bilge Pumps: 3 bilge pumps in each hull and 3 bilge pumps in each engine room.

Berths: 4 berths with queen-size mattresses. In addition there are 2 single berths forward in each hull. Each berth has two cooling fans and lights, a sink, underneath seating and large clothes closet. The aft berths contain large storage areas under the bed. There is a full complement of sheets and towels for each berth.

Dinghy: 14' Caribe dinghy in excellent condition. This was purchased new in 2014. The engine is a 40hp, 4 stroke engine with electric start. The dinghy can be lifted on the aluminum davits using the two electric winches.

Refrigeration: Two12 volt units. One large built-in unit located in the port hull with a 12 cubic ft. freezer compartment and 4 cubic ft. refrigerated section. The second unit located in the galley has a small freezer section and a 6 cu.ft. refrigerator.

Galley: The galley has a propane gas stove and 4 burner range, refrigerator, 4 drawer stack for utensils, two large lazy-susan compartments, a twin sink with sea water and fresh water faucets and a large cupboard for pans. A complete set of crockery, utensils, and cookware. Large central cabinet for plateware, serving dishes, glasses, wine and a hanging locker with harnesses, 2 inflatable life jackets, flares and foul weather gear.

Communications: The SSB Icom 802 and P4 Dragon modem allow for communication by voice or text using Sailmail or other Ham radio sites. There is also a Standard Horizon vhf and a handheld vhf.

Lights: Size 40 masthead tricolor, steaming light, sidelights, stern light. Interior lights: All lights are LED or compact fluorescent.

Tools: a full complement of tools, spare parts, bolts, machine screws, clamps, electrical parts and rigging spares.
