DESCRIPTION

PRICE JUST REDUCED - If Dr Who wanted to exchange the Tardis for the freedom of the sea to tackle these Fish Men he would buy one of these! How they get all this accommodation in a 8.5 metre boat is simply amazing!

Two large double berths and a single it would be a nice cheap waterside apartment at the very least. With a beam that squeezes easily through the French Canal system and able to cope with long distance cruising this little catamaran has many advantages over comparable catamarans available on the market. Get cheesed off with your neighbours and move on, what a life! You could be sitting in the bay "far from the maddening crowd” sharing the same view with a 6 million Quid super yacht!

This is a classic yacht 1979 nearly 40 years old has some stories to tell, travelled to the Baltic, explored the med and been to places where monohulls dare to tread, there is still a lot of life in this old cat yet. With subtle improvements made by her current owner, she is in pretty good condition for her years. This type and age of boat holds its value and is almost an appreciating asset unusual on boats and worth throwing even more money on if you desired.…..

With factory fitted mods and one of the last of these wonderful little catamarans built to have aft suppression plates fitted to prevent the incidence of “Hobby Horsing”.

If you are looking to sail fast forget this one, in catamaran terms, this one is a tortoise, but who is in a hurry however it will still get you there faster than a lot of monohulls! It sports a good old reliable Mercedes Diesel engine which reliably plods along and gets you anywhere you want to go. With the benefit of twin props it's easy to helm and manoeuvre in the marina.

Berthed in the lovely Port of Cartegena with all facilities and catamaran friendly. An active social life with ex-pats of all nationalities meeting for a weekly BBQ. The area is steeped in history, with an Amphitheatre, museums, and amazing architecture. This is where the Spanish Armada assembled before they went into battle with the British fleet. You won’t want to leave!

These Catfisher's are very sought after and I can see buyers beating a path to our door to get their hands on this beauty!

Owners Comments

When we bought “Lucy...” six years ago we had some specific criteria:-

- two comfortable cabins

- French canal capable, (shallow draft & less than 5m beam)

- low marina fees

- minimal capital outlay

Basically, we were after a comfy little 'apartment' where we could spend the winters away from chilly northern France, and enjoy the company of fellow Yachties that we had enjoyed so much on our 15 year circumnavigation (1988 – 2003).

A study of the used boat market quickly steered us towards older catamarans and the Catfisher 28' in particular, and eventually to “Lucy..” The Catfisher is unashamedly a motor-sailer. To windward she is quite 'slammy' but with wind on the beam or aft she goes like a train! The big Mercedes engine drives twin propellers via a hydraulic drive system – comfortably cruises between 5 & 6 knots with the engine at 1500rpm, and a dream to park when you arrive! On the last leg of our delivery run from Preveza, Greece to Cartagena, Spain, we recorded 9kn as we rounded Cabo de Palos! Wind was F4/5 on the beam, a couple of rolls on the jib and one reef in the main – she went like a marine 4 X 4 and steady as a rock! “Lucy...” is one of the last – if not the last – Catfisher to be built and has the twin stabilisers that were a feature of the later Catfisher 32's. The stabilisers are said to go a long way towards mitigating the 'hobby-horsing' that was a feature of unstabilied 28's, although we have no experience of those.

We are now in our 5th winter in Cartagena, love the town and have made several friends in the area. Lucy has hardly moved in that time, just the regular trip to the yard next door for anti fouling and anodes. We are offering “Lucy...” for sale at almost the exact asking price as when we bought her! During our ownership we have made several improvements:-

- resprayed hull

- replaced deck covering with “Isiteak”

- replaced stuffing gland material with latest silicon grease impregnated material

- new autopilot

- new Vitrifrigo fridge/freezer

- new upholstery in the saloon

- new mattresses in the fwd cabins

- new electric toilet

- new seals and closing levers on fwd escape hatches

- new aluminium & teak passerelle

- etc etc!

“Lucy...” will be 40 years old next year and will leave us better than we found her! We're sure she's good for another 40, she just needs a little TLC every now and again!

We're now up against the age curve and will seek to replace “Lucy...” with a more modern power boat … but we're sure to miss her!!

Note: The anchor rode lockers on the Catfisher 28 are in the most foreward section of each hull and are thus the worst place to stow the great weight of a full chain anchor rode. The current owner's view is that a new rode should be made of say 10 to 15m of chain spliced to 60m or so of octoplat or similar rode. The decision is left to the new owner.

Anti Collision Zones.
The Catfisher 28 has a foam filled volume, beneath the port and starboard foreward deck lockers, for collision mitigation. On “Lucy...”, these volumes had become damp with moisture ingress via the small plastic hatches through which the original foam had been injected, thus giving a false indication of osmosis. The current owner has removed all the old foam, dried the volumes, refilled with new foam, and reglassed the floor of the lockers
in 2015/16.
