Born Free is a 28 foot motorsailer built by the renowned Fairey Marine company in 1963. She is hull Number 27 of some 80 vessels of this class.
Her hull is constructed of double diagonal hot moulded Agba ( Nigerian Cedar) and is immenseley strong and light. This timber was used for building ships lifeboats until the advent of fiberglass.
Her first owner was Peter Hill the film director whose crowning glory was the firm "Born Free", hence the boats name. Under his ownership she was sailed as far south as the mediterranean and as far north as the Baltic sea, showing what an incrediably sea wotrthy boat Fairey had made.
Born Free's current owner has restored the vessel not only to her former specifications , but byond that by incorporating a hot water system with a shower. Her steel fuel and water tanks have been replaced with modern bespoke plastic ones.
The water tank holds around 25 gallons and the fuel tank closer to 50 gallons, so maintaing her as a serios passage boat.
New sail set by Crusader , and the old ones have also been retained, still inusable condition but would require checking before use.
She has been extensivley refitted and rebuilt buy the current owner with no expense spared over the last few years and is now ready to go cruising once again .
The refit has included complete replacement of her cabins superstructure including new frames and a large part of her decking. The whole vessel has been treated with Smith's Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer (CPES) which should preserve the woodwork for many years to come, she was then overcoated with 5 coats of Teamac marine paint to provide a protective finish.
The mast and boom have been treated with a specialist aluminium protective coating which should last for many more years.
The helm position has a complete array of instruments for both monitioring the engine and navigation at sea .
Engine wise a Perkins 4.99 40hp inboard diesel engine is fitted which has been fully refurbished , sitting on new mounting blocks and is in excellent working order.
Internally this boat has been refitted to a high standard with new uphosterly , LED lighting, New windows and blinds
