DESCRIPTION

Bruce Roberts Design 9.8m Steel Chined Hull Bermudian Cutter rig sailing boat with inboard diesel engine, shaft drive and long keel. This yacht became the property of a marina on whose behalf we are are offering the boat for sale.

The yacht has stood untouched for some time and will require cleaning, TLC and repairs in line with issues identified during survey. A full survey of the vessel was undertaken in October 2021 and the report makes essential reading.

ELECTRICAL/NAVIGATION EQUIPMENT (Surveyor's Comments)

Electronic and Navigation Equipment

The following was seen aboard operating as far as can be tested in the circumstance unless noted:

  1. a) Navigation lights - Bi- colour, stern light, anchor light, steaming light and tri-colour. Mast

    lights not seen if working.

  2. b) Depth sounder and Log displayed on Autohelm Speed and Depth.

  3. c) Wind speed and direction displayed on Autohelm Wind.

  4. d) Depth, speed and wind also on Autohelm Multi at chart table.

  5. e) VHF Type ICOM ICM505. Radio check with Solent coast guard was not carried out.

  6. f) Autopilot type – Raymarine ST7001+ - Displays stated pilot not connected.

  7. g) Radar reflector – AIS active Sea me.

  8. h) Compass – Fluxgate Autohelm.

  9. i) Navtex – Nasa – did not power up.

  10. j) Windex at mast head.

  11. k) Chart Plotter in the cockpit smashed screen – Raymarine RC320.

  12. l) Compass – Binnacle type.

  13. m) Chart plotter standard Horizon – not tested, in locker.

ENGINE (Surveyor's Comments)
  1. Engine and Installation:

    1. a) The engine and mechanical systems were visually inspected only.

    2. b) The boat was fitted with an inboard marine diesel engine type Yanmar 3YM20.

      Engine number E00698.

    3. c) Engine hours did not show on the gauge. This is a common LED issue.

    4. d) The engine visual inspection showed the exhaust elbow was corroded and needs

      replacement. The engine mounts were very corroded.

    5. e) The engine oil was dipped and was visibly black.

    6. f) The gear oil was dipped and was visibly clean.

    7. g) The engine was tried to start, it turned over but did not fire up.

RIG/RIGGING/SAILS/COVERS (Surveyor's Comments)

13. Rig and rigging, sails and covers:

  1. a) The boats mast was a deck stepped aluminium spar and boom with stainless steel tabernacle base.

  2. b) The mast and boom were straight when viewed up the track and along the base although the plastic sail track fitted was distorted.

  3. c) The goose neck was found secure and not worn excessively.

  1. d) There was a spinnaker pole mounted on the mast. The pistons need freeing off.

  2. e) There was no running rigging fitted.

  3. f) The boat was fitted with 1 x 19 stainless-steel wire shrouds and lowers with Stay lock terminals and with open bodied rigging screws. The split pins were all seen to be in place. There was no major corrosion around any of the fittings.

  4. g) The boat had a roller furling system fitted to the forestay. This was operated and the extrusion found to be straight.

  5. h) The boat had a split back stay with a manual tensioner fitted. No issues noted.

  6. i) The age of the standing rigging was not known. Advise the mast is lowered and full inspection take place.

  7. j) The sails were stored in bags aboard the boat, they were not fully unfurled so was a limited inspection.

  8. k) The main sail was in the boat in poor condition.

  9. l) There were two furling foresails in the boat. The sails inspected from deck level were in fair condition but very dirty.

  10. m) There was a spinnaker in a bag below decks. This was inspected as far as possible and found in good condition.

  11. n) There was a cutter sail, hank on type.

GROUND TACKLE/MOORING (Surveyor's Comments)

12. Ground Tackle and Mooring Arrangements:

  1. a) The boat had a Plough Anchor marked 54Ibs attached to 8mm chain and warp. The chain was not all pulled out onto deck to inspect. There was surface corrosion on the chain.

  2. b) A second anchor was seen in the cockpit locker, this was a large Plough Anchor attached to warp.

  3. c) The boat had an electric pillar windlass fitted. We got it to briefly operate from the deck switch but power was from battery charger not battery storage. It was not operated under full load.

  4. d) There were cleats welded through the deck. These were found secure. There was no access to the underside.

  5. e) The boat had Mooring warps and fenders. These were not closely inspected as part of this survey but were suitable to moor the boat up.

DECK FITTINGS (Surveyor's Comments)
  1. a) The boat had stainless-steel stanchion posts welded to the toe rail. No issues seen.

  2. b) There were twin stainless-steel guard wires. They were gates at the aft end. No issues seen.

  3. c) The Pushpit and Pulpit around bow sprite were stainless-steel and welded to the deck. No issues seen.

  4. d) The four winches were found secure and free to operate. Two further ones had been removed / stolen leaving screws proud. The electric coachroof winch (one of the 4) was operated.

  5. e) The mainsheet track and Genoa tracks were all operated but dirty.

  6. f) The boat had a spray hood and cockpit tent. Both were excessively mouldy on top, stitching broken leaving forward frame dropped down but possibly salvageable condition. One rear zipper broken. Advise cleaned and restitched and water proofed. Suggest it is NOT pressure washed.

  7. g) The vessel had a stainless-steel ladder which extended below the waterline by two steps.

  1. h) The Spinlock rope jammers were cracked on the edges but operable.

  2. i) There was a self-steering mechanism not tested.

STEERING and STERN (Surveyor's Comments)

5. Steering:

  1. a) The boat was tiller steered, the tiller attaching to the knuckle on top of the stock. The tiller was not fitted but in a locker in the boat.

  2. b) There was full movement port and starboard.

  3. c) The rudder was a steel blade attached with stainless-steel fixings, all found secure.

  4. d) There were no signs damage to the blade.

  5. e) The rudder stock was seen to be stainless-steel.

  6. f) The rudder tube was mild steel and the seal at the top was a rope packed gland. No

    signs of leaks.

  7. g) A linear electric autopilot motor was attached to the stock. This was securely fitted.

No areas of concern found.

6. Stern gear:

  1. a) The boat was shaft driven

  2. b) The stainless-steel shaft exited the hull through a bearing holder with a cutlass bearing

    fitted.

• There were no signs of play in the cutlass bearing.

c) There was no corrosion on the bearing holder and the fixings secure.

  1. d) The propeller was a 2 blade fixed type made of bronze. The fixing was a stainless- steel nut with split pin. Found secure.

  2. e) The stern gland was a rope packed, greased type with remote greaser. The hose was not perished, the clips secure.

  3. f) The was no water in the area below the stern gland or evidence of leaking.

No areas of concern found.
