DESCRIPTION

Wooden Ships Comments on this Sole Bay 35 Designed by J. Francis Jones and built by Armstrongs of Scarborough in 1965. The design of this hull was used for the Guernsey pilot boat, proving the capability and seaworthiness of this hull. Long keel with a transom stern and high bows, she is not a high performance sailing yacht but is supremely comfortable and safe in adverse weather, an ideal blue water sailing yacht that will look after the crew in any conditions. The size of the boat and rig mean she can be easily sailed singlehanded, and with inside and outside helm positions she is a very versatile yacht. Professionally maintained in current ownership and kept up to a very good standard. Her modern Iveco 90hp diesel gives reliable power, with her feathering 4 blade propeller she makes 7.5knots cruising speed at only 1gallon/hour consumption making for economic cruising. Aft cabin with 2 berths and heads compartment, 2 saloon settee berths and potential for another single berth in the forecabin. A nice looking yacht, ideal cruising boat with a good inventory of equipment and ready to go   Length on Deck 35’ Beam 10’ Draft 4’9” Displacement 10.5 tons   Construction Carvel planked in 1” larch and mahogany, copper fastened to closely spaced steam bent oak timbers. Larch below the waterline, mahogany above. Bronze strap floors across the centreline aft of the engine, these were all new in present ownership. There are a couple of original galvanised strap floors at the aft end with new galavnised bolts. External cast iron ballast keel of 3.2 tons fastened with 11 galvanised keel bolts of 1” diameter. Marine plywood deck sheathed in epoxy glass cloth and finished in grey deck paint. High painted toe rail all round with a varnished mahogany capping rail. Deck all new in current ownership. Marine plywood coamings with a mahogany veneer inside and out on both fore and aft coachroof and the wheelhouse. Coamings finished in International Woodskin. Aluminium framed windows in the wheelhouse and round bronze portholes in the coamings. Sheathed plywood coachroof decks with varnished mahogany hand rails on laminated deck beams. Stainless steel pushpit, pulpit and stanchions. Bronze cleats and farileads. Varnished mahogany forehatch and skylight on the coachroof. Transom hung rudder with hydraulic steering. Stainless steel davits over the transom. Inside and outside helm position with Morse engine controls at each helm station.     Rig Ketch rig with a gaff mainsail and Bermudan mizzen makes for easy handling with good off wind performance. Both masts are varnished pine round section stepped in galvanised tabernacles on deck. Varnished booms and gaff yard. Galvanised wire standing rigging to external galvanised chain plates on the main mast. Running backstays to mainmast on 2:1 tackles. Stainless steel standing rigging on the mizzen to chain plates on outside of coamings and wheelhouse roof enabling unimpeded access around the aft deck. Main halyard falls come to a pin rail on the shrouds. Mainsheet to a track on the wheelhouse roof. Mizzen mainsheet to aft deck. Headsail hanks on to forestay. Sails include gaff mainsail, topsail, Bermudan mizzen, mizzen staysail, 2 x genoas, jib and cruising chute.     Machinery Iveco Aifo 4.5l 90hp 4cyl diesel. Maintained annually and professionally repaired if ever required PRM500 gearbox with single lever controls to a centreline 4 blade feathering MaxProp, installed in 2015. 7.5 knots cruising speed at 1 gallon/hour. 9 knots max speed. 2 x 12 volt 90ah batteries for engine starting. Single 12 volt 120ah domestic battery. Charged from engine alternator or through installed shore power system and a smart charger. 1kw inverter for 240v power when at sea. 80 gallons of diesel in 2 separate stainless steel fuel tanks. 80 gallons of water in 2 separate stainless steel fuel tanks. Calorifier connected to the engine producing hot water.     Accommodation 4 berths in 2 separate cabins with possibility of another single berth if required. 6’5” headroom in the saloon. 6’2” headroom in the wheelhouse. 6’1” headroom in the aft cabin. 6’2” headroom under hatch in forward cabin. Centreline steps down from wheelhouse into aft cabin which has a large single berth either side and a heads compartment forward to port. Storage lockers on the centreline at aft end of cabin. Blakes Lavac sea toilet discharges directly overboard. Hand basin with hot and cold pressurised water Wheelhouse with 6’2” headroom. Starboard side bench seat that could be a berth if required. Steps down into main saloon with galley port and starboard. Gimballed Taylors paraffin stove with oven. Galley sink located on port side opposite the stove with hot and cold pressurised water. Half height bulkheads separate off the cabin from main saloon. Solid fuel cabin stove on starboard side. Saloon settee berth either side with a centreline dropleaf varnished mahogany table. Centreline door into the forepeak. Chemical toilet on the centreline with a hand basin to port. Large sail to starboard and anchor locker forward.
