Wooden Ships Comments on this H.J. Mears and Son Motor Launch
Newly built motor launch from the well known yard of H.J. Mears and Son in Axmouth, east Devon.
This launch is nearing completion in the workshop but there is still time to customise the finish to an owners wishes. She has not yet been named so that will be the choice of her first owner.
A perfect size launch for river and coastal exploration, she is built to the lines of the east Devon beach fishing boats that have been launched at the yard for many years with some distinctive features that tell them apart.
Firstly the Mears boats have a central drop thwart comprising a large sawn oak knee on the inside of the hull each side fastened to a solid length of timber across the hull below the sole boards, giving a lot of rigidity to the hull without a central thwart impeding passage around the inside of the boat. The keel also has a marked rocker making the boat easier to haul up the beach as is the customary local way.
The high bow and sharp turn to the bilge mean she will be a dry boat with plenty of buoyancy and stability. Her Beta 14hp engine, due to be fitted shortly, will provide plenty of power to push local tides making her a capable coastal boat and not just confined to river use.
