DESCRIPTION

Wooden Ships Comments on this 49’ Breton Gaff Cutter   The extraordinary revival of interest in the French traditional boat scene in Brittany as a result of the festivals in Douarnenez and later in Brest has been the envy of traditional boat enthusiasts in the UK. In true Breton fashion the magazine Chasse Maree which started the whole movement instigated a program called Bateaux des Cotes de France – Boats of the French Coast. The plan was to encourage individual ports or regions to build a replica of the fishing or trading boats from their areas. Moreover, the build would attract government and commercial sponsorship.   The result has been the construction of some 80 boats either new builds or rebuilds from the 80’ Recouvrance down to the little 20’ open sailing fishing boat built for the editor of Chasse Maree himself, Bernard Cadoret. This cutter is one of this illustrious fleet, a replica of a 1910 sailing fishing boat from the port of Longuivy on the north coast of Britanny. Built by 2 local boat builders in full public view between 1988 and her launch in 1992 she joined the regatta fleets in Douarnenez and Brest. She then sailed to the Caribbean and South America returning by way of Bermuda before being sold to the present family owners in 2008 since when she has operated as a charter boat in the Golfe de Morbihan on the south Brittany coast running day and weekly sails with individuals and groups. None of us get any younger so after 8 happy and successful years in operation it is now time for the family to hand over to a new generation.
