40′ Sole Bay ketch designed by J. Francis Jones and built by Gordon Armstrong Marine Ltd, Scarborough

This 40′ ketch design features a long, straight keel incorporating an iron ballast keel, a slightly raked stem and a vertical transom stern with the rudder hung on the back. Midships wheelhouse with coachroof fore and aft. Toe rail of about 6”/9” all round.

This is one of 3 Sole Bay 40’s built, of which 2 survive. She is very strongly built, a good powerful vessel capable of offshore passages. 1989 refit included:

New deck and most of beam shelf.

All new superstructure.

All new electrical wiring.

New keel bolts and floor bolts, prior to specialised hull sheathing.

New water and fuel tanks, plumbing and pumps.

New electronics and fire fighting equipment.

New shaft, tube and recon prop with rope stripper.

Major engine overhaul and new generator.

In present ownership since 1996 during which time she has been maintained to the highest standard. She is ashore every winter in the Royal Forth Yacht Club undergoing a full programme of maintenance. Having cruised extensively locally and further afield she is a much loved and admired vessel.

Construction

Planked in iroko, carvel laid on 2” x1.75” sawn oak frames at 8” centres, copper fastened.

Deck is 1.25” in 2 layers of marine ply, epoxy bonded and sheathed in epoxy/glass scrim and painted. The deck was laid new in 1988 as part of the major refit.

Coachroof and wheel house also rebuilt as part of the recent major refit with coamings in solid iroko continuous under wheelhouse doors with ply coachroof and decks, epoxy sheathed.

The wheelhouse is raised in marine ply panels incorporating the windows on iroko framing, also with epoxy sheathed plywood roof. All painted on the exterior and varnished interior.

Wheelhouse windows set in moulded iroko frames. Aft 2 windows of wheelhouse are opening aluminium, all others fixed. Sliding door to port & stbd with steps down inside. Forward window incorporates a Kent Clearview screen.

Round and oval bronze ports in the coachroof coamings, those in the sides are opening, those aft fixed.

Access/ventilation/escape hatch over aft coaming, + large moveable swan–neck vents on Dorade boxes.

Varnished hand rails on forward coachroof and wheelhouse top. The clear forward coachroof deck allows easy access to the mast and stowage of a dinghy.

Forward of the main mast is the fore hatch giving ventilation and access to the forward cabin, constructed in varnished mahogany with a dead-light and raised to a good height off the deck.

Between the fore hatch and the stem is the electric anchor windlass with foot button control. There is a small anchor davit.

Foredeck working area, side decks and aft deck are very clear with easy access and passage.

A small hatch on the after deck gives access to the voluminous lazarette compartment which also houses the generator in a silent box.

The toe rail is carried on metal brackets with a varnished capping rail. Stainless steel stanchions carry twin guard wires with pulpit and pushpit. Opening gate section both sides to boarding ladder. Varnished capping rail to pulpit with gate.

The underwater surface of the hull is sheathed with the Mitchell Mariner copper nickel patent sheathing system. This amazing treatment, similar to ordinary copper sheathing, is done to order by the inventor, Fred Mitchell of Poole. It has an estimated life of 40yrs and requires no anti-fouling. Repairs can easily be effected if torn.
