DESCRIPTION

Wooden Ships Comments on this 27' Buchanan Sloop Designed by Alan Buchanan and built by Conyer Boat Co. Ltd near Faversham, Kent in 1961. A conventional design of the period with long keel and a gentle sheer line. Easily sailed single handed but with enough space for family cruising. Fitted with a Beta 20hp diesel in 1998, reconditioned in 2020. Well documented history including several surveys, the last of which was done in 2006.   Length on Deck 27’ Length Waterline 21’ Beam 8' Draft 5’ Displacement 4.1 tons Thames Tonnage 7TM Sail area 354sqft     Construction Planked in 7/8” African mahogany all copper fastened to steam bent Canadian Rock Elm timber. Oak stem an stern posts. Varnished mahogany transom. Galvanised strap floors across the centreline. External iron ballast keel of 1.7 tons fastened with iron keel bolts. Marine plywood deck sheathed in epoxy glass cloth and laid on pine deck beams. Varnished mahogany toe rails. Stainless steel pulpit, pushpit and guardrails. Varnished mahogany coachroof coamings with a sheathed plywood coachroof deck. Forward end of the coachroof is a locker with a lid each side of the mast. Varnished mahogany hand rails and sliding hatch . Plywood self draining cockpit with a bridge deck and varnished slats on the thwarts. Hatch at aft end into the lazarette. Transom hung rudder with steel hangings.     Rig Masthead Bermudan sloop rig on a keel stepped anodised alloy mast. Varnished wooden roller furling boom. Stainless steel standing rigging to internal galvanised chain plates with stainless steel rigging screws. Single cap shroud and twin lower shrouds. Plastimo roller furling headsail system. Mainsheet is made off to stainless rings either side at aft end of cockpit. Pair of non self tailing bronze sheet winches on the cockpit coamings. Single bronze mast winch. Mainsail and genoa both in serviceable condition.     Machinery Beta Marine 20hp 3cyl diesel installed new in 1998. Injectors and injector pump reconditioned in 2020. Stainless steel shaft to a centreline fixed 3 blade bronze propeller. All stern gear and prop new in 1998. Twin lever engine controls. Vetus plastic fuel tank of 5 gallons in aft port locker. 4 x 12 volt batteries under the quarter berths. 1 manual and 1 auto electric bilge pump.     Accommodation 4 berths including 2 quarter berths and 2 saloon settee berths. 6’ headroom in the saloon. Steps down over the engine box with a chart desk to starboard and galley to port. Quarter berth each side going aft under the cockpit thwarts. Galley has a single stainless sink which gravity drains overboard. 2 burner gas stove. Outboard facing chart desk with instruments and switch panel under the deckhead. Drawers beneath the chart desk. Half height bulkheads separate off the main saloon. Full length settee berth each side with shelves outboard under the deckhead. Low door going forward into the forepeak. In the past there was a heads fitted here, but at some point it was removed. The Blakes seacocks are still in place.
