DESCRIPTION

Remarks :

A classic yacht with recent history - this is now a project boat that was formerly known as the "Greater Manchester Challenge" and "Morning Star". This is a steel gaff rigged ketch and was designed as a sail training vessel to take young people to sea. For many this would be their first experience of being afloat. She was constructed by largely unskilled hands donated by the Manpower Services Commission and the young people of Greater Manchester. Built on money raised by public donations. Sonntagskind has accommodation for sixteen cadets and three officers. She was designed to class as a Board of Trade Class XI Sail Training Yacht. Unfortunately, the wooden masts are on longer in existence.

The vessel is being sold as seen by way of sealed bids.  All sealed bids to be received by Network Yachts Brokers  by 12:00 UTC Friday 14th October 2022

Accommodation :

Designed as a training yacht, she has berths for nineteen. Originally three of those berths would have been for the officers and the remaining sixteen for the cadets.

Large U-shaped galley with fixed oven, hob and grill. She  has a lot of kitchen storage and two basins.

Large aft cabin which shares a head with a two bunk berth on the other side. The second head is located between the fore berths and the galley.

History & Construction:

Greater Manchester Challenge is a gaff rigged ketch and was designed as a sail training vessel to take young people to sea. For many this would be their first experience of being afloat.

She was constructed by hands donated by the Manpower Services Commission and the young people of Greater Manchester. Built on money raised by public donations the steel hull was transported by road from Liverpool and the project completed in the old Crossley engine sheds before launching at Salford Quays on the Manchester Ship Canal.

Greater Manchester Challenge has accommodation for sixteen cadets and three officers. She was designed to class as a Board of Trade Class XI Sail Training Yacht, she served for many years as the North West boat for the Ocean Youth Club

Unfortunately her original masts have been destroyed but we do have a full compliment of drawings showing her designs, supplied by the Laurent Giles Archive.

The hull shape is of chine form and full steel construction. Three hatches: bow, midship with ladder access and aft with ladder access. Teak decking.

Mechanical :

Engine located midship - It is not known when it was last run.
