DESCRIPTION

26ft. SOUTH COAST ONE DESIGN BERMUDIAN SLOOP – Burnes of Bosham 1963 – Exceptional – Lying: Sussex

The South Coast One Design needs little introduction as one of the most successful yacht designs of the mid 20th Century. In 1955 a group of Island Sailing Club members approached Charles Nicholson to design an inexpensive fast one-design cruiser/racer. The first six boats built by Lallows of Cowes all competed in the 1956 Round the Island Race winning the first six places overall. The SCOD, as they became known, proved to be all that was wanted as a one-design and in all, over a period of about fifteen years, 106 boats were built by various boatyards, mostly on the South Coast. The Burnes built boats are now particularly sought after and much cherished by enthusiastic owners and members of the thriving South Coast One Design Association.

ARDOYNA was commissioned by B S Lidington of Ardoyne, Haslemere, Surrey in 1963, SCOD number 80 built by Burnes of Bosham, West Sussex.  She was stationed in Bosham and cruised and raced in the Solent in Lidington’s ownership which continued through to the mid-1970s. Carvel mahogany planked hull, copper fastened to steam bent oak timbers. Oak centreline. Sheathed marine-ply decks, mahogany cabin and cockpit coamings and brightwork. Varnished spruce mast and boom.

Extensive professional restoration including… Replacement steam-bent Green Oak timbers where necessary, all copper fastened. Galvanised steel strap floors. Some replacement planking.  Yanmar 10 HP 1GM Diesel (no more than 10 hours use.) Battery, Stainless steel water tank, Fuel tank with deck filler. Winches, Electrics, Navigation equipment, Scarphed section of mast top. Bilge pump, Propeller, Ropes in a classic material. Sails, main, jib and spinnaker. Cushions and curtains.

All mahogany external brightwork and internal joinery stripped and revarnished with classic yacht varnish.

New cockpit and overall covers.

Antifouled May 2020
