A Borwicks Windermere gentleman's launch
A recently well documented boat having arrived on the Thames in 2012 and having been in Norfolk prior to that. I first got to know this boat when selling it for a family who had used her around the Macclesfield area for many years. Each of the recent owners has spent significant amounts on maintenance and used the boat for cruising the Thames quite extensively.
Viola is constructed of mahogany on oak as were most of Borwicks boats. It appears that Viola has a sister boat built around 1926 and named Dorothy which was used to ferry passengers and sight seeing parties around the lake. She also has the little aft cockpit area which seats two in addition to the seating for up to 8 people in the bow. A compartment allows for the use of a Portapotti or additional storage. Dorothy is still on Lake Windermere.
At the Thames Traditional Boat Rally Viola appeared in 2013 subsequently winning Best new entrant, an award given by the Thames Vintage Boat Club. Indeed the boat bears the TVBC plaque number 122.
The current owner Mr Jacobson has enjoyed entertaining friends from home and abroad on Viola and finds her ideal for small children with the cosy cabin and ample freeboard. He cruised to various locations overnighting in hotels and B&B establishments. A move abroad now necessitates finding a new owner for Viola.
Revarnished in 2016, she has a full length burgundy cover which protects the varnish to the waterline. This would make an ideal electric day boat after conversion.
NB the green glass has been replaced with clear glass and there are now windows through from the forward cockpit to the main saloon area.
