A Cruising Wife's Thoughts about Story Seeker
Story Seeker, a Beneteau 445 built in 1993, is truly suited to cruising. Being a total novice to ocean sailing it took me some time to recognize and appreciate the remarkable features of this winsome boat. When my husband first stepped aboard her during his long and thorough search, he, at 6’3”, was delighted with her spacious headroom. I fell in love with her months later when I jumped off her swim platform, conveniently located at the stern, into the crystal clear waters of Baja California Sur! The swim platform is built across the stern of the boat and serves multiple purposes. For me, being able to easily slip into and out of the water using her handy retractable 3-step swim ladder is pure joy. Of course I also enjoy jumping or diving into the water. It’s less than a foot and a half between the water and swim platform. Two hatches hide beneath the teak toppers on that platform and the ladder tucks beneath it. We store our snorkeling gear in them along with extra gear for guests. After a swim I sit on the step above the swim platform, reach to my left to grasp the shower hose. I hose off in the warm water (it’s close to the engine so it gets warmish). It’s my favorite shower on the boat! As I rinse myself, I rinse the saltwater off the platform. I towel off and step into our spacious cockpit. It easily seats 8. The table has teak leaves that hang gracefully on either side of the center consul when not in use. They stand at the ready to serve friends at a moments notice. The center consul serves as an ice chest (it’s insulated) for parties and as handy storage unit. Removable royal blue cushions made of Sunbrella cover the teak seats. There’s legroom aplenty and many a lively meal has been shared in this delicious space. A snap on cover protects ii in the rain spanning the space between the dodger and the Bimini. There are 2 large lockers hidden beneath the cockpit seats. Plenty of room for lines, hoses, parts, etc. After a swim and shower I head down the wide and well-placed stairs into the salon. There’s a bathroom to my right at the bottom of the stairs. A bedroom to my left and an office with a custom built desk located adjacent to the bathroom. The main cabin houses the kitchen along the port side with freezer, frig, oven and stove, double sink and ample counter top space. A bank of handy cupboards marches along the back of the kitchen with ample counter space on top. A new countertop adds sparkle! On the starboard side you’ll find the Navigation Station, salon couches and table and a library space. The living space includes a DVD and TV player combo. A stereo system near the nav-station offers indoor and outdoor speakers. The comfortable master suite includes a custom built Cool Max mattress that we’ll have a hard time saying goodbye to! Generous storage areas include a built-in hanging closet, and a dresser with shelves on the port side. Another head with shower graces the starboard side of the main berth. I love manning the helm, as she is a dream to maneuver. She turns on a dime. And anchoring is a snap! The numerous extras on the boat that make sailing her a breeze are listed here for your convenience.
