Year Built: 1933
Location: River Avon
During his lifetime Carl Gustav Pettersson’s reputation stood highest in Scandinavia, and he did not really follow the post war focus on planing craft. But in more recent years he has become better appreciated in other parts of Europe. Boats of his design have achieved classic status, many surviving examples have been extensively and expensively restored, and they will probably provide enjoyment far into the future. To a large extent the Motor Yacht Society in Stockholm has become the spiritual home of the Pettersson boat. With a growing interest internationally in traditional motor cruisers and launches, new boats are being built on Pettersson lines, and the style is influencing some of today’s designers.
Fortunately a large archive of CG’s drawings has been preserved and are now in Sjøhistoriska Museet in Stockholm.
Designer: Carl Pettersson 1876 – 1953
Design No. 656

Length: 26ft ( 8m)
Beam: 6ft (1.76m)
Draft: 2ft 3ins (0.7m)
Displacement: 1200kg
CONSTRUCTION:
Carvel planked on steamed oak frames with Galvanised steel intermediate frames.
Planks below waterline are Larch, with varnished Mahogany above waterline.
Decks are teak laid on marine ply substrate.
Keelson and deadwood is Larch and the stem in Oak.
RESTORATION:
The boat has been professionally restored to the very highest standard to incorporate an electric propulsion system together with a low maintenance hull structure. The work was carried out three years ago, and the craft has enjoyed trouble free cruising on the Stratford River Avon.
Full details of the restoration together with photographs are available. In principal, it involved mahogany splining of the carvel planking and then sheathing with epoxy / glass to end up with a very low maintenance hull. The topsides are varnished above the rubbing strake, and Awlgrip sprayed below in cream. Below the water line Alwgrip Hull Guard is used, which is over coated with antifoul. All internal surfaces are epoxy coated and gloss painted where on show.
MACHINERY:
The new propulsion system is electric and uses a Bellman Marine 10kW water-cooled 48VDC motor with a single fixed 3 bladed bronze propeller. An excellent cruising range is provided with four Lithium batteries allowing 7-9hrs motoring dependent on speed and conditions. The boat is fitted with an on-board charging system enabling easy top-up charges as required. A 12VDC lithium service battery is used for ancillaries and for powering the twin bilge pumps that pump out any rainwater accumulated in the open cockpit.
The steering is by a Dynema filament rope running through low friction sheaves and operating a stainless steel quadrant mounted on a stainless steel stock and fenced rudder blade.
ACCOMMODATION & LAYOUT:
Seating is custom built folding mahogany seats, which can be supplemented with rattan chairs. Capacity is four in comfort, with an occasional six.
A galley unit houses a cool box, plus a spirit single burner stove. A mahogany picnic table can be arranged to provide civilised dining for four.
For the more adventurous, a forward cabin provides an upholstered occasional twin berth, or a perfect place for a quiet siesta.
The craft has a safety certificate, and has a full survey and valuation report.
OPTIONAL TRAILER:
RATTY has a custom four-wheeled braked road trailer, which can be used for slipway launching. The brakes have a water flushing system should the trailer be used in salt water. The trailer was built for RATTY and has only been used in fresh water to date.
BROKERS NOTE:
A meticulously restored classic Pettersson launch with the emphasis on low maintenance and low environmental impact with the efficient electric power plant. An ideal launch for socialising with friends and family on rivers or lakes and with the option of over-night/weekending onboard for longer trips. A great option for getting afloat this summer and to enjoy peacefully pottering about on the water.
