Bowriders: A Fun, Family Speedster. Small and nippy, bowriders are the epitome of daytime fun on the water. They are the quintessential family boat, where groups of up to ten people can get together to enjoy watersports, day cruise along the coast or while away hours quietly fishing.
These hugely popular boats, which range in size from 16 to 35 feet, take their name from the spacious seating area in the bow of the boat. Their classic V-shaped hull allows for a smooth ride even for those in the wind-in-your-hair front seats and allows them to navigate different water conditions safely and comfortably.
The bowrider sports boat is loved for its sociability and value for money. Versatile and with a cleverly designed open layout it allows passengers to spread out between the front and rear seats either side of a central ‘cockpit’. This use of space creates different areas for socializing, where enjoying summertime drinks, picnicking, or preparing for a spot of waterskiing can be done in comfort.
Bowriders are renowned for their speed and maneuverability. Sterndrive power is the most common, with the engines tucked below a lounge area at the back of the boat. The result is a wonderfully uninterrupted, safe and easily accessible swim platform. Jet propulsion is another option, especially for those who want to navigate shallower waters, enjoy fast acceleration or benefit from the responsive handling. Jets too have no exposed propeller, which lends itself well to the range of activities on bowriders. Instead, an enclosed impeller and jet nozzle drive the engine’s thrust. Having said that, there are increasingly more outboard bowriders on the market, their ease of maintenance, reduced noise and increased cockpit space hugely appealing. Outboards can be fully trimmed (or lifted) out of the water to allow for swimming and watersports.
Pleasure is the name of the game in a bowrider. Their versatility, easy manageability, and the fact that they can be easily towed have made them hugely popular with both first-time buyers and experienced boaters. Enjoy cruising along the coast or lake shorelines, stopping for refreshing swims or to soak up the sun in the lounge area. Try your hand at waterskiing or wakeboarding (and store equipment in the onboard racks), delight the kids with a towable inflatable doughnut or simply bob around in the sunshine with a good book. With plenty of well-thought-out storage areas, they are excellent fishing boats and, with features such as onboard coolers in many models, can cater to the days’ needs of big groups.
Bayliner Boats are a big name in bowriders, with six models currently in production alongside their centre console sports boats, deck boats and wake sports boats. Likewise, Sea Ray, the renowned sports cruiser manufacturer, has six ‘aggressive little sportsters’ in their arsenal. Tahoe, Maxum, Regal, Chaparral and a whole host of other manufacturers offer new and used models, bringing affordability and boundless fun to the water.
