Dehler 25 - 1987 - £7,250
The Dehler 25 is a well proven design, easy to handle with sparkling performance and Water ballast helping to reduce her weight for road trailering.
This is a good example of these superlative lifting keel trailer-sailers, with a good inventory, a Yanmar 1GM10 Diesel Inboard and a Dehler 4 wheeled braked road trailer with separate launching trolley.
To all intents and purposes 'Bluebird' would be described by most as a Dehler 25, but in fact she was built and supplied as a Dehlya 25 (denoting that she was originally sold as a 'Sailaway' boat by Dehler with a series of factory packages for home completion). Having said that, it is clear that the manufacturer's intention was that the 'packages' should be simple to assemble and fit to a 'sailaway' boat, with the consequence that 'Bluebird' doesn't look to be less than factory finished. Over the years additional/alternative equipment has been fitted which complicate the picture yet further. Suffice to say; as currently presented - most would be very hard-pushed to deduce that 'Bluebird' is anything other than a very presentable and trailerable, later vintage Dehler 25, with an inboard diesel engine and a substantial four-wheeled 'piggyback' trailer.
The current ownership has run for eighteen years since 2001 and in that time this yacht has received considerable attention: The keel has been replaced, along with all bearings and locating pads; a replacement Yanmar 1GM10 diesel was fitted, which also had a major overhaul in 2012; The standing rigging was renewed in 2011/12, the underwater surfaces are Copper-coated (2005 and again in 2015). and a new GRP Rudder blade fitted January 2020
Meanwhile the trailer has recently had new suspension units, three new wheels a replacement hitch and new winch fitted.
Forward berths: A thin layer of neoprene/insulation was applied beneath the nylon lining materials seen in the pictures to reduce the level of condensation generated when sleeping in these berths. The plywood berth support panels are hinged lending good access to open volume storage beneath.
WC: A marine flushing toilet, hard plumbed for the most part, is fitted to port of the keel and flushes directly to the sea. Access to the pump and plumbing is relatively good. A straight forward and practical and realistic arrangement that simply requires others to vacate the cabin space for privacy.
Saloon: Two straight and parallel settee berths face each other across the centre-line, with a removable table that is supported on the rear of the keel box and a pedestal leg to the aft end. A self-contained galley unit is carried on ball-race slides to the aft end of the port berth and slides away within the space beneath the forward end of the cockpit seat to that side while, to starboard, the same space enables a hanging locker to be provided. There are six closed lockers beneath the windows, outboard of the settee berths, with additional pocketed storage in robust acrylic provision to each hull side, to match that within the forward 'cabin' space.
Chart table: A forward-facing, dedicated chart working space is located to the forward end of the starboard settee berth. The chart table securely bridges the space between the keel box and the hull side, with chart stowage within and dedicated, fiddled almanac and book shelves outboard.
Galley Unit: This is convenient to draw forward and may be sat at from the centre-line companionway step/storage unit. Substantially made, the galley is fitted with a single-burner, alcohol (methylated spirits) stove by Origo and a generously sized stainless steel sink (with fold-up faucet). Fresh water is foot pumped from the front of the starboard settee berth. Beneath the sink and cooker are two sensibly proportioned drawers,; one taking all the crockery in an organised fashion and the other is for cutlery and cooking utensils.
The standard Dehler-supplied aluminium alloy mast and boom are supplemented by an aluminium spinnaker pole. The mast is stepped and hinged within a stainless steel (replacement) mast step and this is well braced and supported by the top of the keel box within the hull.
The mast is fractionally rigged, but unusually stayed with 'forward' lower shrouds as well as the more normal aft lowers. A Plastimo 608S roller reefing system is fitted to the for'stay for the headsail, while the mainsail is reefed by means of two slab reefs that are led aft,to the cockpit.
The 'forward' lower shrouds come to the same pivot point as the mast in order that they may remain tensioned as the mast is lowered, down into a receiving roller that is mounted on a raised and removable 'bridge' that closes the gap between the two aft pushpits. The roller then enables the lowered mast to be run forward and secured to the forward pulpit for trailing.
The standing rigging was replaced during the winter 2011/12.
The sail inventory includes:
Mainsail.
Roller reefing genoa, with new UV protection sacrificial strip fitted January 2020.
Symmetrical spinnaker.
This particular Dehler is fitted with an inboard diesel engine, rather than relying on an outboard motor. The Yanmar 1GM10 C (rated at approx 8.5HP) was a secondhand unit when fitted in 2005 and then was partially re-built in 2012. It drives a fixed two-bladed propeller. The shaft, P-bracket and 'Cutless' bearing were all new in 2012 too.
Two replacement lead acid batteries were fitted in 2018 and are charged either by means of the engine-driven alternator or, when at rest/sailing, by a 20W photo-voltaic ('solar') panel.
General note on safety equipment: Any safety equipment such as Liferafts, Epirbs, fire extinguishers and flares etc. are usually personal to the current owner(s) and if being left on-board as part of the sale of a used vessel may require routine servicing, replacement, or changing to meet a new owners specific needs.
The trailer package is that which was originally supplied by Dehler themselves; namely that of a four-wheeled trailer with a 'piggy-back' wheeled cradle to be let down into the water to minimise the amount of water required to float the vessel off/on and avoiding the need to immerse the main road trailer's brakes and bearings in salt water.
The main trailer has been up-rated and refurbished by the fitting of a more modern hitch; replacement of the winch (by which the launching 'dolly' is hauled up onto the road trailer); two replacement suspension units and three new wheels and tyres.
