Designed by J. Pain Clark LOLA was built in 1925 by William King & Sons in Burnham-on Crouch. She was the largest - and last of about 8 yachts he designed – another; LONA II, built before the Great War, is also still sailing. Lola is a wonderful boat and for 20 or so years her present owners have sailed her over 30,000 miles – mainly in Northern, Baltic and French waters. She is reportedly strong, well mannered and utterly dependable. She will handle rough weather better than most, and she heaves to beautifully. While she cannot compete with modern yachts to windward, off the wind she will show any comparably sized boat a clean pair of heels. Her beauty always turns heads both afloat and ashore. Well known, especially around the Clyde, so many people stop to admire - perhaps having crewed her or known someone who did. Like any wooden boat, the maintenance demands are significant, but if kept up with a regular schedule; not too onerous. Fully equipped with all modern navigation and safety equipment, she has been fastidiously maintained by the current owner. A full out of water insurance survey was carried out in 2010 and the report is available for inspection. She is now arguably in as fine a condition as she has ever been in her 85 years. With supremely happy memories, her present owners must downsize - so LOLA is now waiting for someone to look after her anew and perhaps to mark her century afloat. She will give that person nothing but joy.
