Captains Comments:

Captain Mike has been the live-aboard captain since delivery of the boat.We asked him for his comments:
“This boat has had the least problems of any boat I've sailed and has been the most comfortable by far. All factory systems and the installations done by the commissioning agents in Ft Lauderdale have performed almost flawlessly for the entire 9,000 nm cruise.
The ease of handling has made the training of the owners a breeze. The ability to set the "Code 0" genaker with the roller furler and electric winches allowed us to use it far more than we would have a standard genaker. We didn't mind if the wind came up and we had to douse it quickly. One person handles it easily from the helm. We were able to sail at 5 knots in 8 knots of breeze and even sail with the wind slightly forward of the beam.
The helm station is very well layed out and thought out: the sheets and the main halyard led to the two electric winches made raising the main sail very simple and dropping it takes about 2 seconds. No more running across to deal with the port jib sheet when tacking, jibing and trimming. The (canvas) enclosed helm was great in almost all weather but the option to sail from the inside helm was great with the plotter, radar, autopilot handy and almost 360 degrees visibility.
I felt very good about the added life-lines across the stern as well as the grab rails on the forward coach roof and next to the helm. The folding props saved us days on the total trip and perform as well as the fixed props in forward and reverse. We could motor with one engine at 6 knots and burn a little over 1 gal per hour giving us a very good range under power. During the day, the solar panels kept the batteries up.
Overall we made very fast passages. After leaving Panama into the ITCZ and 10 kn on the nose and motoring for 3 days, we took off and sailed the 3800M run in 23 days of reaching in the trade winds. Our fastest day was 230 nm and routinely did 180 nm to 190 nm days. The beam reach from Tahiti to Hawaii was 2300 nm in 13 days of smooth sailing.
After sailing lots of catamarans I realized the Leopard 46' has almost no bridge deck slamming and rides as smooth as a larger boat. We got into a tropical wave situation out of Jamaica and "Pacifica" handled the 12 ft quartering seas very well with no problem. I never felt like the boat was out of control and my conservative reefing regiment didn't seem to slow her down at all. We always took one reef at night and used the factory reefing schedule at all times.
I shouldn't even mention the movies on the flat screen at night or the 2 to 3 showers I took each day (thanks to the watermaker) but that and the good meals that came out of the freezers…all this made the long passages very easy. Being able to bring up the Raymarine plotter, radar, wind, SOG etc from my cabin flatscreen TV was great and gave me peace of mind on my off watch times.
I guess I'm spoiled for life. It's not likely that I will do this many miles as fast, as easy or more comfortably than on "Pacifica".
Signed Capt Mike
