Laurent Giles Centreboard Sloop, Designer: Laurent Giles, Builder: Elkins of Christchurch, Year: 1964, Location Dartmouth, Devon, Length on deck: 38'3, Beam: 10'4, Draft: 5'4 / 6'9, Tonnage(TM): 12, £38,000, REF: 10222, Full Specification, Laurent Giles Centreboard sloop. An immediately recognisable Laurent Giles design, this yacht has in the previous ownership made 2 Atlantic crossings, cruised the West Indies and down to S Americas, she has cruised the Baltic and the Med. The previous owners published a book about their voyaging, ‘Like Ships that Pass in the Night’ by Judy Clements. Length on deck 38’3”, Lwl 26’, Beam 10’4”, Draft 5’4”/6’9”, Tonnage 12TM, Designed by Jack Laurent Giles of Lymington. Built by Elkins of Christchurch. 1964, Elkins was a major yard at the time and worked closely with the Laurent Giles design office building most of the UK Vertues. Jack Laurent Giles and his staff were one of the big players in yacht design at the time with many famous designs to their name including some seriously big yachts and some successful racers. One of many centre-board yachts designed by Laurent Giles this is a fine big boat, generous free-board, sharp stem gently flaired to throw the water clear and the squarish stern typical of Laurent Giles race yachts and fast cruisers at the time. In a letter dated July 1979 from Laurent Giles to the previous owner, they state that this is “a unique boat… a one-off… extremely well built attractive to the man who appreciates real quality and pedigree”. Quite a recommendation! She was surveyed in 2015 and most of the recommendations have been completed. Construction, Planked in teak below the w/l with mahogany topsides. All steam bent oak frames on an oak back-bone. Long iron keel, slotted for the centre-plate. Keel bolts last pulled 1985. Iron strap floors. Bronze centre-plate contained within the depth of the keel so not intruding into the cabin. Laurent Giles signature feature of raised varnished sheer strake with gold cove line. As recommended in the survey, the transom has been replaced and new horn timber and associated woodwork replaced to make good the deterioration found in the rudder stock tube. Also planking was replaced where necessary. Deck, Yacht-laid teak over a marine ply sub-deck, painted for sailing in warm climes. Good clear side decks and fore deck. Usual Laurent Giles deep toe-rail with varnished teak capping. Stainless steel pulpit, push-pit and stanchions with twin guard wires. All deck fittings including cleats, fair-leads and stem-head fitting are substantial and top quality. Wheel steering on Whitlock pedestal fitted in previous ownership 1986. Coachroof.
