DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION

The DH (Dix Harvey) 550 embodies the latest thinking in catamaran hull design, interior space utilization and quality construction.

Cheetah was built in Trinidad in a huge shed at Power Boats LTD, a large well known boat yard.

With a powerful rig, daggerboards, high bridge deck clearance and streamlined design and weight, the result is a beautiful boat designed for fast, comfortable passage making that is easily managed by short-handed crew.

The interior layout, finishes and amenities were designed for first class comfort and ease of living aboard as well as entertaining guests and family while minimizing impact on overall weight and boat performance.

Modern, wood/epoxy saturation construction (cold mold) is utilized to achieve superior stiffness, strength and impact resistance, while keeping the boat light and building high end, offshore motor yachts. Top quality Brunzeel plywood and West System epoxy saturation is used in the hulls and cabin house, with structural cedar used for strength in stringers. Limited fiberglass was applied to deck surfaces only to lessen the impact of UV rays over time. The result is a construction process that produces a hull structure much lighter than fiberglass, more resistant to damage from bumping docks and other objects, more easily maintained and much more easily repaired if needed. And the result leads to eye catching, graceful curves and lines in the boat’s hull, cabin and decking.

The boat hulls are laid up with 1/4" Bazeel plywood from Belgium which is highly resistant to water intrusion and rot. Bulkheads are cut by computer and set upside down, then braced with stringers to form the hull frame. Each sheet of ply is thoroughly soaked in West System Epoxy and then laid on the frame one at a time in an overlapping fashion starting at the deepest part of the hull. The under water part of the hulls has six layers of ply and it tapers to three layers at the deck level of the topsides. The result is a strong, resilient, light weight hull structure that is perfect for a catamaran. It won't craze like fiberglass if you bump a dock, it is stronger than a fiberglass hull while remaining much lighter, and it is easier to repair if necessary.

The deck is three layers in the same fashion and a top single layer of Fiberglas only to protect against the suns UV rays.

SAILING PERFORMANCE

The DH550 was designed for performance sailing and safe, fast passage making. The hull, daggerboard, rudder and underbody design dimensions are in keeping with the latest in high performance catamarans.

Combined with a large, fully battened Spectra mainsail and Spectra jib and an overall light weight from its modern construction method, the DH550 excels in any sea and wind condition. With a self-tacking main and jib, tacking to weather is a breeze with no grinding! And on a reach or off the wind, deploying the huge Screecher sail from the extendable carbon bow sprit launches the boat into a different zone of performance all together.

At the same time, the DH550 makes it easy, safe and comfortable to sail from the safety of its forward working cockpit. It is not necessary to run around on deck to tack or jibe or reef; everything is easily within reach from the cockpit. And the ride is smooth and comfortable with nothing having to be stowed away inside and water glasses sitting calmly on the galley counter.

Sailing the DH550 is easily and safely managed by a couple or short-handed crew and even single-handed with the help of the autopilot and she’s the perfect water home for exploring the Caribbean or sailing around the world!

Owners Comments on Performance:

Under sail we usually cruse around 8 - 12 knots in 15k wind depending on the wind angle and sea condition. We have sales at speeds ofknots in 25k wind and could have easily done more. Dudley Dix says the boat will do around 25 knots and not be on the edge. Our record for 24 hours at sea is 312 k miles when sailing from Puerto Rico to Trinidad a few years ago with three guys and a dog onboard. She motors at 8 - 10 knots using both generators; and 5 - 6 knots with only one generator which uses half the fuel.

PROPULSION SYSTEMS: STATE OF THE ART ELECTRIC HYBRID

In keeping with the goal to produce an easily driven, economical, fast passage maker, the design incorporates the latest technology in efficient propulsion. Electric hybrid propulsion in not new in the marine industry with nearly all ships, super yachts, ferries and the US Navy successfully employing this technology. In summary, the boat is propelled by (2) Homewood Electric Motors; 18KW each; with direct drive and 18 inch 3-blade Max Props. The advantages of Hybrid Propulsion in a catamaran are many:

  • 18KW electric motors equivalent torque to 54hp diesel motors
  • Much quieter operation; no noisy, smelly diesels under aft bunks
  • Instant torque to props for ease of maneuvering in tight quarters
  • Power derived from 2 smaller diesel generators housed forward & quiet
  • Additional power from solar panel array on salon roof
  • Much less fuel consumption overall
  • Electric motors require practically no maintenance
  • Greater torque to props motoring into wind and rough sea conditions
  • One less diesel to maintain; most cats have (2) propulsion & (1) generator
