DESCRIPTION

Skorpion 1200 steel hull built by Feltz in Hamburg, Germany; self-fitted, launched 1986 (VAT/taxes paid), equipped for cruising/blue water sailing. With her long keel she cuts elegantly through the waves, making sailing her easy (single handed or with children), her deep cockpit makes her safe and comfortable even in heavy seas. 3 cabins, 6 fixed berths, plus optional 2 in saloon. Starboard aft additional cabin/bike/drying room. 62hp Betamarine (2008, approx. 600h),

The steel hull of this Skorpion 1200 was built 1984 by Feltz in Hamburg, Germany. I completed the interior and all deck fittings myself, and launched her in 1986 (all VAT and taxes paid). She was built and equipped for cruising and blue water sailing (our dream was to sail her around the world). She can be easily sailed single handedly or with family.

With her overall length of 13m, beam 3.77m, daught 1.8m, a long keel, moderate yacht stern and traditional overhanging bow, she she has not only got a very elegant appearance, but also cuts easily and elegantly through the waves, which makes sailing with her comfortable and remarkably dry even in heavy seas. She has a fairly deep aft cockpit, so that sailing with small children is safe and sheltered in all conditions.

She has 6 fixed berths: 2 in a V-shaped forward cabin, a cabin with bunks just in front of the mast, and a portside aft cabin with a double berth. The U-shaped saloon settee with table converts into another double berth, if needed. The space for the starboard aft cabin has not been fitted out and is used as storage/ engine compartment/ bike shed, increasing her ample storage space even further.

The engine has been recently replaced (2008, approx. 600 running hours) and is a 62hp Kubota diesel based Betamarine engine with  Hurth single lever gear box. The engine sits deep inside the keel, adding to the  4ton lead ballast, as does the 350l diesel tank. There is an additional 25l diesel day tank with filters before and after it to prevent any contamination of the engine. In the front part of the keel are two 200l stainless steel water tanks and a 90l waste water tank.

She is built for safety and reliability, and has a direct rod steering gear with a Cobra Steering column with a Ritchie steering compass and Raymarine autopilot. Additionally, there is a Windpilot Pacific windvane, 2 echosounders, 2 logs (one mechanical, one electronic), a Lowrance chart plotter and Furuno FM 2721 DSC radio. She has 2 anchors with 10 mm chains (80m and 40m) and a lewmar concept windlass and chainstopper.

The working genoa is on a Harken roller reef, which is the foresail we mainly use, but she is cutter rigged, so can be sailed with foresail or storm jib on the inner forestay, and a flying jib on the forestay. She has a second genoa and 2 substantial spinnakerpoles, which are stowed and worked along runners at the front of the mast. Other features of the rigging are fixed mast steps for the 15.35m aluminium mast, lazyjacks with mainsail cover for easy stowing and 3 step tie reef for the mainsail (there is also a spare main sail).

Below deck in the pantry is a Tuco paraffin cooker with oven (can be run on diesel). A Dickinson Alaska Diesel heater with a glass door is in the front of the saloon, giving off plenty of heat and the warm glow and cosy atmosphere of a traditional fire. There is ample storage room under and in the back of the seats, below the floorboards and into the keel, so even on long cruises it never feels crammed. Engine starter and general utility batteries (12v) are separate, with battery management system and integrated charger.

Although we never managed to sail around the world with her, she has taken us on tens of thousands of miles through most of the Baltic Sea, North Sea, Irish Sea and North Altlantic. Even in heaviest weather she has sailed us safely and comfortably through rough seas. But we are getting older, and sailing mainly in cold and rainy areas, and,  having less time for maintenance due to increased work commitments, we are intending to replace her (heavyheartedly) with a motor cruiser.

She is perfect for long cruises, with a family or small crew. She would need a complete corrosion check of the hull. She is suitable for someone who has the time and skill to renovate a steel hull, or somebody who is building their own boat of a similar size and seeking to use her equipment (a list of her equipment is available on request).

We have just sailed with her through Scottish waters, and she can be sailed from her current location in Northwest England anywhere/anytime.
